How often does Time Machine prompt me to back up? I've read that it backs up on the hour, but is that only if the external drive is connected? I'm using someone else's Pro which I do time to time and I seem to remember being prompted by Time Machine to back up very, very infrequently. I've read a bit on Time Machine and I'm not sure exactly how the process works.

Thanks

Time machine backups should be automatic. The only time I've ever been prompted to backup is if I haven't had my TM drive connected and it hasn't made a backup in a week, two weeks, three weeks. Can't remember the frequency of the notifications specifically though so don't hold it against me.

Like matty1551 said, it will just run every hour on its own as long as the destination drive is present. If the drive is not present nothing will happen until ten days has gone by then you will start getting popups says "Time Machine has not backed up in 10 days..." etc...

Thanks for both responses. The ten-day prompt was what I was specifically looking for Weaselboy, thanks.
