I have my backup turned on and checked the encryption option thinking I wouldn't get my protected files like on iOS. Well the initial backup finished and now I'm stuck on encrypting. It's been and the noted mark in the screenshot for past 24 hours. I started this backup at 5pm yesterday. What can I do? Does it need more time or am I stuck on a frozen status? It's a 4TB Seagate Backup Plus USB 3.0 external drive.

It took around 16 hours to encrypt my 1 tb hard drive I can only imagine the time it's gonna take to encrypt a drive with four times that amount. Leave it plug in for one more day and see.

I wonder if I can shut of the laptop without damaging the drive. I have to take my laptop with me on Tuesday somewhere!

Just make sure to unplug the hard drive before you do that. The drive will pause the encryption and resume when you connected it again to your MacBook and it's plug in & charging.

Well after 5 days of encrypting it's finally done!

4TB = 5 days

Whew. :)

Just in case you ever want to do this again, you can just reformat the drive to encrypted format in Disk Utility and that takes about 30 seconds or so. Of course this would erase the data on the drive and you would have to start your backup over again, but it would still be far faster that five days.
