One MacBookPro and one MacBook, both are upgraded to Catalina, both have time machine backup to time capsule, it took 10 hours for MacBookPro (backup size 98GB) to complete the first backup after upgraded to Catalina, it took 13 hours for MacBook to complete.

Is it expected? None of previous OS upgrades caused such long time to complete backup, a major OS upgrade usually took longer time for the next backup but it is just about 2-3 hours maximum.

I guess I should reformat time capsule and do start a refresh backup for Catalina, might be faster...

I time machined right before and after. It was about 18gb and didn’t take very long.

I re-formated time capsule hard disk, deleted macbook local snapshots, did a fresh full backup. still around 98GB backup size but this time it took only 2 hours.

looks like the old backups are very different from the files in Catalina, hence it took very long to compare every single file?
