I couldn't find Apple TV in the Buyer's Guide. Is it time to get into this? We have lots of other Apple stuff and want to see more classic movies at home and download them to iPads for travel. Any major upgrades coming soon?

I'd say now is a good time to buy. It was a little over 3 years before they updated the first apple tv that came out in 2007.
ATV2 is a nice unit. I'd maybe wait another month for WWDC to see if maybe they announce something.
I don't think they'll wait as long as they did the first time for a revision.
Apple didn't have to exert much effort to become a top player in the set-top box wars. I think if they really wanted to own this market they could. A dual core ATV with an app store and higher resolution would be awesome. But more new TV's with built-in wifi and apps, could make these boxes less appealing in the near future. And if that happens, I also wouldn't be surprised if Apple abandons the ATV(again).
I'm hoping for a new ATV this summer. But, if you really want a set-top-box right now, you can't go wrong with AT2. If you're an iTunes user, I'd highly recommend it.

Thanks, I'll hang till September. We have a Wii and it streams Netflix to the main TV at home and I can use the app store to download movies to the iPads. I think they will bust it with the next upgrade and go after the gaming market, with the result that the ATV product will have more horsepower.

I do not think apple will go after the gamer market with the ATV, there are already enough players in that market.
How many TV's do you have in your home, if more then 1 i would say get one of the 2nd generation ATV's now and see how you like it. We have two and will most likely pick up a third later in the year.
Worst case if a 3rd generations comes out later you can retire the 2nd gen to one of your other TV's.
We love them and they have made it possible for use to cancel cable.

There are a couple of good threads on here about folks doing just that. We received our first ATV2 last october and soon after bought a 2nd. By the end of October we canceled cable (saving over $60 a month) and so far we have not missed it.
The only sticky point is a good place to find a few (very few) of the cable programs my wife liked, mostly Food Channel stuff (cake challenge and cupcake wars), other then that it has been great.
Our ATV2 enabled us to cancel cable too. They're a really good value and like others have mentioned it's not expensive so not much point in waiting like you might do with computers and other more expensive tech. In any case, you could easily move it to another TV if you want to pick up a newer model. Or selling it on ebay should be easy since it's so small and has no moving parts and keeps it's value up. Even when the new one comes you should probably be out no more than $40-$50.

I doubt that Apple will update the AppleTV hardware this year. People don't upgrade their TVs, DVD players or Blu-Ray players every year like they do with their cell phones.
On the other hand, it is only $99, so the idea isn't impossible. I don't think that they would add 1080p because the bandwidth needed if they sold that resolution of movies and TV shows.
At $99, tech nerds reading this forum would give away their version 2 to friends and family, and buy version 3. That would increase the installed base of users and possibly increase iTunes video usage.
