My 2018 16" MBP is still running OS 10.14.6 Mojave.

I have just uploaded Capture One 22 photo editing program but cannot get it to run and believe my problem is probably my outdated OS.

So, what is the next logical update I should go to. At 83yo I HATE change, which is why I'l still running Mojave so not sure I need to go "all the way" to the latest. One thing I really cannot afford to do is to muck the whole thing up.

Updates is saying Monterey? Seems a huge step all in one?

Thanks

while is is possible that you might run into some update related issues - probably someone here can and will help.
Most people I know move and work with programs - if Capture One is one of the ones for you, go and update system an Capture One.
To be as “save” as possible - what else do you use? - please be as precise as possible… and take in account that people might answer who are located on a different hemisphere of this planet… so it might take while at certain times 🤜🤛 🤓

Indeed. Minimum system requirement for 22 does state OS 10.15 on their website.

On a supported system I'd personally have no issues loading Monterey but being on a patched Catalina OS (and CaptureOne11) install I've limited experience re bugs, just what one reads here really.

Well, your approach to life has worked well so far.

My mother is 100. We've put all sorts of technology in her home and shown her how it is used. The way she uses the technology is to wait until someone visits and then she asks them to do a bunch of searches or lookups for her. Her other approach is to call us up to look up something for her.

I just upgraded two systems to Monterey. One was on Big Sur and the other was on Mojave. I have a laptop on Monterey and wanted to wait until bugs that I regularly run into, were fixed. 12.5 was that release for me.

My recommendation, if you want to be cautious, is to do a install of Monterey on an external SSD. Then run it off the external SSD and copy your programs and files over from the internal SSD and see how things run. You will then get an idea of the things that run fine or that don't run at all. You might be able to get newer versions of the software to run too.

I just salute you for being 83 yo and using these apps. When I’m your age I never want to see a computer again and will live in a cabin eating porridge by the fire…and will probably be watching K-pop on the phone nobody knows I have.

There is very little difference going from Mojave to Catalina. I understand there is quite a bit of change upgrading to Monterey though. I have been running Catalina with no problems so it's what I'd recommend, just to play it safe

I suggest update all the way to Monterey 12.5, or not update at all.
Otherwise, you have the worst of both worlds: a change, plus an OS that is still out of date.
Monterey 12.5 is pretty solid.

I would jump to Monterey as well. Apart from your current problem with Capture One, you are also exposing yourself to greater risk of internet vulnerabilities, as I doubt you are getting security updates with your current OS. Going to the latest release will improve your protection.

Apple has not made huge leaps in the last few years, so I don't think you will have too many issues. I have an iMac that is stuck on Big Sur, and I don't really notice the difference between using that and Monterey. I think people will see more change going to Ventura in the Autumn as there are significant changes to the Control centre and App management with centre stage.

OP:

Do you have a backup drive?
Preferably, a CLONED BACKUP, created with either CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper?

If so, you can do a "last backup" before you update to Monterey.
If things go wrong, you could:
a. boot from the backup
b. COMPLETELY erase the internal drive
c. RE-clone the cloned backup BACK TO the internal drive
....and be "right back where you started from".

This way, you can update to Monterey with the confidence that if something doesn't go right, you can "get back, get back, get back to where you once belonged" without too much trouble...

As others have mentioned, going to Catalina may be something to consider. From the standpoint of perception, there will be very little change given that the GUI aspects are the same. Going beyond that the look has changed.

So it may be worth looking at the OS comparability list for your programs and see if it is supported and if so go to that release. Catalina is very stable at this point. The issues many complained about were corrected in latter releases of that OS.
