Timeline of new releases

I was wondering where I can find info about the timeline history of the MB/MBPs.

In other words, is there a single reference for when the CD came out, how much longer till the next update, then the C2D, then I guess Santa Rosa is expected to come out in May, etc.

I'm curious about the trend here. When CD (first gen) there were lots of bugs apparently, but now it seems to have gotten fixed. How long did it take from the initial CD release to now and how many new releases were there in between (I'm guessing CD, C2D, Santa Rosa, Penryn)?

When a new MBP comes out with a new Intel chip, I'm wondering if it's useful to follow a such a trend so that I can be sure that when I get a new laptop, its fully mature and have all it's bugs worked out.

I know people don't recommend this way to buy a new computer (I don't either), but I was just interested, especially since I don't need a new computer now, I thought I'd just learn as much as I can. The topic just interests me.

MacBooks might be released with Santa Rosa Platform (Centrino Pro) at the WWDC 2007 (My best guess) and to coincide with Leopard. Mostly wait for Leopard, though. As for problems, these problems are fixed, and Leopard will squash the remaining bugs out of the Intel Macs. Even now, these Intel Macs are great machines. Don't think about problems when you buy a new mac.

In the end, just buy what looks good... Either you end up with a bleeding edge machine with lots of bugs to work out, or you end up with a machine that is about to be replaced by the next best thing. Just buy something and enjoy it.

How many months is an announcement worth to you? Three for the announcement, two more for shipping... Thats a long time. A current MBP in good condition will only loose a few hundred in resale value over that time.

Well if you read what I wrote before, you would know that I simply wanted to know the cycle for educational purposes. I didn't need a MBP right now so I can wait. I'll get what I want when I want it, but for now I am trying to do some research.

Yeah...that's what I was thinking, but that doesn't seem to make sense because the release of the CD processors has a very small bar. I can't believe that the introduction of the powerbook with their G4 processors had a bigger impact than the MB/MBP and its transition to the Intel CD.

From everything I have read, the general feeling is that we will be with C2D until santa rosa. The predictions on that are 3rd or 4th quarter of this year. It takes apple a couple months after a new chipset comes out for them to integrate it. Before I got my mini after the last little bump, I was really hoping it would go C2D. It didn't and still hasn't. But that is an entry level machine. My friend bought a CD MBP 3 weeks before intel announced C2D. It wasn't integrated until 3 months later, he was and is still happy. I would not wait for a chipset change anytime soon, just speed bumps.

Good point. Then really all I'm waiting for are led screens and maybe, flash drives?

And possibly a redesign, but that's extra.

You mean the graphs? They show how much time it took before that update. For example, the iPod was last updated 9/2006. Prior to that, the update was 10/2005 -- almost a year between updates. The previous update was 6/2005 -- just 4 months between updates. So the 10/2005 bar is short, showing that it occurred after just 4 months, while the 9/2006 bar is long, showing that it occurred after 11 months. The red bar shows how long it's been since the last update -- about 5 months.
