TimeMachine backups, with a MBA or MBP

Do you use a MBA or MBP? If so, do you use a USB drive for TimeMachine backups?
I have a 1TB drive connected to a dock (CalDigit) to do backups. Should I be disconnecting the drive first, if am about to walk away with my MacBook?

If you have a USB drive attached, you should safety eject the drive before disconnecting it and walking away with your laptop.

I have two drives for Time Machine backup -- one network drive and one USB SSD. I make sure the USB SSD is safely ejected before I disconnect my laptop and take it away.
