TimeMachine on a NAS has stopped working

Hello,

after having upgraded to SOX Sierra, TimeMachine on a NAS drive has stopped working.

I have tried to delete the network disk and then to reinstall it. I have successfully added it once more to the TimeMachine disks, everything seems to work.

However, when I launch the backup, I get an error saying "backup disk" not found.

Any idea, what can I do? Please advise, thanks, daniele

Don't use network drives for TM. It will fail eventually and you'll need to start the backup from scratch. It's never been reliable and it's not worth it.

But, if absolutely necessary, make sure your NAS is mounted. Do you see it in Finder left bar under Shared devices?

I don't totally agree with that. I use TM on NAS. Yeah, it's not perfect and I wouldn't rely on it as an EXCLUSIVE backup strategy, but it does work relatively well in my experience.

I keep a small amount of space on the NAS for TM backup but I also have some external USB drives that I use which have higher space allocations. Those drives are not left plugged in and get updated every couple of weeks I suppose.

I haven't upgraded to Sierra yet though so can't be too much help, but I would consider rebooting the NAS if that hasn't been done yet. TM does "quirk out" sometimes and typically I can fix that by shutting down both the MBPro and the NAS and starting them up.

And yeah, sometimes TM totally craps the bed and I have to do a brand new backup. But again, not using it as an exclusive backup option it's not an issue for me.

It's generally just better to use a cheap USB drive for that. And yes, I understand NAS may be easier as its wireless, but it's simply much slower and unreliable, and that's not what you want in a backup.

SOX? Wasn't aware that there's a Sarbanes–Oxley build of MacOS Sierra.

You don't state which NAS you're connecting to. You don't state how you're connecting to it (AFP/SMB/NFS) over wifi or wired ethernet?
