oh my 24iMac died... long story short. Can i check my timemachine (external drive) - make sure it was backing up correctly, or check contents without messing up my friends iMAC. I haven't seen any notes on this elsewhere.

Yes. Just click the Time Machine hard drive in desktop and select backups, then it shows you the backups sorted by date

thanks! just checked. it is all there! timemachine works like a charm. I had one other experience with a bad drive months ago. swapped the drive out myself, and timemachine restored the machine beautifully. Great app.

Time Machine is great, but dont rely just on Time Machine, as if something catastrophic should happen to where your iMac and Time Machine drives are located, you just lost your machine and backup.

Make sure you burn things to DVD, photos, tax records, etc, and give them to someone you trust (family member) that does not live in your area, or a bank safe deposit box. Cloud backup is also another safety net too.

I have a partitioned Lacie external HD that I keep a full clone (Carbon Copy Cloner) of each of my computers on. I keep this HD in a Honeywell fireproof/waterproof safe, which is then kept inside my fireproof gun safe (which shall remain undescribed ;) ). It is 100% kept, controlled, updated, and accessed by me alone. I figure that should provide as good of protection for my personal data as can reasonably be expected.
This in addition to my miniStack V3 with an "Enterprise Class Hitachi", as a Time Machine external on our primary machine...
Yes, I had an "Oh Sh*t" experience with my iMacs HD failing (ice packs work wonders ). I sleep easy now. And my wife is much relieved :D
