Timer being shown in text field???

On my wife's IPHONE 6 plus, after the new IOS 9update whenever she sends a text message she gets a open box in the text field with a timer on it. How did it get there and how can we get rid of it?

i had that as well weird I just rebooted and it was gone. still no idea how it got there?

I've rebooted it twice now. Even turned off iMessage and back on. Was fine for a few text then went back to same thing... Just recently turned of the character count.. It hasn't done it yet but she hasn't sent any text either

record a test audio message and see if it takes care of it.

There's a mic button where your send button is when you use iMessage.
