Would such an adapter make sense instead of a traditional 2,5" SSD? I mean from the perspective of leaving more space in the already crowded iMac. It takes mSATA cards.

There's no advantage to something like this. iMacs that use SATA drives already have enough space for a standard SATA drive, either 2.5" or 3.5", and iMacs that don't use SATA drives are already using much smaller devices for storage.

I am thinking about the 2010 and 2011 models. These let you have the DVD, the original 3,5" HDD and also to add an SSD but it is crowded. Also less occupied area is better for airflow, the thick iMacs go hot.

These adapter is just 2~3$ a piece. Not a significant spending to worry about.
Well... you're also going to pay more for the drive itself. But sure -- if money isn't an object, then maybe the price difference doesn't matter.

(Personally, I think most people would want to know about the difference in price, especially when they're trying to resurrect a decade old computer which may or may not be worth the extra expenditure that they're already considering, let alone a few more dollars.)
