Tiny Mini Studio with Garageband

Hi

I'm a student and I got some money (not much) and I decided to start a mini music studio on my mac. I'm gonna buy one or two fairly decent mics and Garageband (with iLife). There seem to be many song writers around here so I could record them for a small fee which I'll save to expand the studio slowly. Anyone doing anything similar or have any comments or advice about this?

i am slowly , but i dont charge for recording because the people who sing over my music .mostly hip hop beats are my boys so i guess its different. If you are goin to charge you should get good vocal mics because you dont want people paying for studio time when its sounds cheasy.

Drum mics

I could recommend that you'd probably want three mics to record drums comfortably. Four or five (or as many as you afford of course) is preferable, but if you can only afford two, I'd mic the bass kick first, then one positioned near the snare but positioned so that it picks up as much as possible.

I don't know too much about mics but I've heard that a good condenser mic can do an entire drum kit if you use alot of compression on the track.

I am doing a similar thing. I let my own band record for free. I have a PowerBook with a USB audio interface, a Berrihnger mixer, and a studio condensor mic. I charge young rappers to produce songs for them. Basically, I come up with a beat or they can buy one that I've already made. Then, they come up with some lyrics, and I charge by the hour for recording. It's more of a hobby for me than a profession, but a little income helps me buy more studio equipment for my band, and it gets my name out there as a local producer. Just don't get greedy. Afterall, a laptop studio might sound good to you and me, but it is NOT a professional setup.
