Tip: Have iPhone speak the names of your contacts

Here's an idea I had earlier today. We can have our iPhone's speak the names or our contacts (or anything else) when they call.

The process requires using the ringtones hack and a text-to-speech solution like AT&T's Natural Voices.

1. Create the audio files using the text-to-speech tool.
2. Convert it to MP3 using something like Audacity. I also recommend adding a bit of silence after the voice.
3. Upload it to your phone using the hack.
4. Go into your contacts and assign the custom ringtone to your contact.

I know AT&T's Natural Voices aren't that good. If anyone knows about a better tool post it.

Nice idea for the time being but if Apple ever decides to add voice dialing (fingers crossed) then we will just use our recorded voice. I had a phone from Sprint before the colored screens that did this. You set up voice dialing and the phone would have a regular ring and then say from "Name here."

But yours is a good solution until then.

For those using a Mac there's a workflow in Automator that will create an aif file from any text file (You can then convert it to AAC or MP3). In addition you get to select the voice that is used.
You could have it say something like:
"Excuse me Greg, your wife is calling,,, you better take the call"

"Not her again!!!"

oh god and imagine the funny ones people come up with as mine are not that funny.
