[TIP] How to speed up video conversion for iPhone

No one enjoys having to wait 20 - 30 min to have their favorite tv episode have to be converted for the iPhone. I spent some time researching a way to speed this up.

Step 1: Download Avivo
If you own a ATI x1000 series or above, go to http://ati.amd.com/support/drivers/xp/radeonxavivo-xp.html

if you own an ATI video card that is not the x1000 series, (x300, x700, etc), go to http://www.etplanet.com/download/details.php?file=1812. You will need to run setup.bat so it can copy all those fun dll's to make it work. Also, this will not work on vista.

Step 2: Encode Video
Try to encode the video in either H.264 codec or PSP MPEG4 Format at high quality.

Note: The H.264 gave me issues but the MPEG4 psp format works just fine. In short, i encoded a 26 min tv show in 2 minutes on a Radeon X300 and it looks just fine on my iPhone.

Why does this do that?

Is this for videos that are being streamed on your computer or for ones that are already on there? If the videos are already loaded wouldn't it be CPU intensive.

Q2: Yes but the video card has a GPU which mainly does floating-point calculations so when you play a video game, the characters appear smooth and not boxy. What Avivo does is of-load some of the encoding to the GPU. Your cpu will still be used but in combination with the gpu, hence yielding significant a improvement in encoding time.

To put it in perspective, when I encoded a 25 min divx file using videora iphone converter, it took 15 minutes. With avivo it takes 2 min.

Damn us Mac users get the short end of the stick... That's so awesome...

I'm thinking about going with the Elegato Turbo H.264 so that encoding/converting will run off that and I can easily do other things on my computer.

let me know how it goes, i read somehwere that the elgato is useless if u have a fast mac (not g4), although i could be wrong.
