Tips on posting photos please

I'm hoping some of the regulars could give some tips on posting photos in the threads. I've posted a few as attached thumbnails but really enjoy looking at the pics that appear larger.

For example, how do you get the pictures to appear as a larger size and still fit into the allotted space? I know this was asked on a thread about something else and it didn't get answered, and I seem to remember someone asking ages ago but I can't find it anywhere.

Some hints and tips, or links would be great!

The photo has to be available somewhere online already; then you include the URL for it using the little icon in the posting interface that looks like a yellow snapshot of a mountain and sun/moon (the "insert image" button).

Examples of photo hosting sites you can sign up for include...

- Flickr (free)
- Photobucket (free)
- Imageshack (free)
- PBase (not free, but very nice for photographers; I used to have a paid subscription but I let it lapse)

We also recommend that you use the TIMG tag. Once you get a URL for the image from your hosting site, you put it in a line like this:

[ TIMG ] the URL goes here [ / TIMG ]

Without the extra spaces shown. The result is that the image will be small enough to fit on screen, but when you click it, you'll get the larger size....

Thanks for the replies. I'll look into the online hosting. My pics aren't that great yet but I don't want to give away rights to the picture either so I'll investigate that too.

Attaching the picture also means you get a clickable thumbnail.

If you press the insert image button

it puts [IMG} tags around the image URL. If you edit the tags to be [img] then large images will be scaled to a clickable thumbnail.

e.g.

You use them as shown above. You upload a picture to a web sharing site. Then you get a URL, which might look something like this:

http://i.pbase.com/u26/mkrishnan/upload/43416193.Web_IMG_0676.jpg

See how it starts with http and ends with .jpg? It should do both or it probably isn't a direct URL to the picture. You can get this from all image sharing sites fairly easily once you upload the picture. Now you just paste this between TIMG tags:

[ TIMG ] http://i.pbase.com/u26/mkrishnan/upload/43416193.Web_IMG_0676.jpg [ / TIMG ]

But you have to delete all the extra spaces I put in above (like the space between the bracket and the characters TIMG. When you do that, the result is like this:

And as you can see, one can click on it to see a larger version (in this case, though, the version on my website isn't large, but it could have been much larger than the version I posted).

Generally, people don't recommend posting super high res images. Most photographers seem to be quite content with web posting images that are 400-700 pixels horizontally.

Side Tip: [ noparse ] tags enable you to post correctly formatted tags without them showing the picture etc e.g
