Don't get me wrong I really like iOS 10's new feature of turning on the display when you pick up the phone so you can see your notifications, but it annoyed me how the phone display would already be on yet I couldn't just lay my finger on the home button to unlock it like I used to in iOS 9... in iOS 10 default settings you have to press down the button every time

You can fix this though by simply going to Settings -> Accessibility -> Home Button -> "Rest Finger To Open".

Cheers :)

Makes you wonder if the initial 'setup wizard' should call this out as an option.
Not likely, because it was changed to "press" because of complaints from 6s/6s+ users who could never see their lock screen notices because the rest to unlock on their phones was too fast. Since that is the wave of the future, in all likelihood, Apple is not going to confuse matters by allowing a 2 choice system. All that will happen if they did would be that people who should be on press to unlock will choose rest to unlock and then start screaming about not being able to read notifications.

If you don't use touch ID or a passcode, how do you open the phone? Thanks for helping out a newbie who is really confused about what they've been hearing on this most basic of phone operation.

It already is a two choice system. You can 'revert' to the iOS 9 method via settings.

Press the lock/sleep button or the home button once to wake up the device and press the home button to unlock the device.

Thank you. I had no idea this could be changed. It sounds clunky but if I want to see notifications first I just use a finger that isn't registered to wake the screen.

So basically just double click if you don't have a passcode or touch id?

If you have a passcode (one of my phones does) you click once and there will be an option to punch in the code?

The point is that you said Apple wouldn't do a two choice system, but in fact they have. For all those upgrading, it will be a jarring change. Why not let them know there is a way to put it back.

It is, but you will only know that if you go digging in the settings. Average user probably never does that.

A 2 choice system during setup (as was asked above). There are lots of things for which there are 2 (or more) choices.

Ok, no idea what you're on about now. Trying to get back on topic, it's great Apple included the option. I still think burying it is a mistake.

Yup, that should be it.

How do you turn off the raise to light up the screen?

I'd prefer it to not light up the screen when I pick up the phone. I'd prefer to keep it the old way.

Thank you for this.

Frustrated at the iPhone 7 announcement, for the first time ever since I bought my original model, the iPhone 3G, I've decided to skip an end if contract upgrade until next year.

So anything that avoids me having to click the home button and potentially avoid "Touch Disease" until then is a bonus.

I just learned something new today. I hated it how the screen would light up just by picking up the phone. Didn't know you could change this. I believe this is also bad on battery. Most of time I noticed screen on because of the way I picked up phone. Thanx.
