Tired of Safari crashes

So I was using Safari this afternoon, even though I usually use Firefox or Chrome. It crashed again on me and a box appeared that said it may be due to the WCIDEngine Plugin? Has anyone heard of that? When I read the problem details to send to Apple, it said "EXC_BAD_ACCESS for exception type, and then for exception codes it said "KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE at (some numbers I'm not copying over). Worse yet, it reminded me that I've had 7 crashes since last report. I'm getting awfully tired of this crap. I run a PC that's on Windows 7 and it runs like a charm. I am seriously thinking about going back to it because I got my Mini with the expectation that it would work and most of the time it does, but it's little repetitive things like this that make me question it.

PS: I will add that I scrolled down the problem details list and it said that "Thread 0 Crashed" and then proceeded to list a number of things about symantec, like .com/symantec.WCIDEngine" Any thoughts on what that means?
 
I would backup all of your files and reinstall. And take extra special care not to allow the Symantec stuff not get anywhere near your computer while installing.

If you actually have physical installation media I would recommend burning it.

Even running a PC you don't need that crap.

I installed Symantec for mac primarily because of its firewall application. I know Apple has one installed already but once I installed it, I was surprised at how many times I was notified of *people* trying to do port scans. I don't know if they were getting past the Apple one or if it was just not notifying me. Hard to say.

Does anyone think the safari crashes are related to that? I was just surprised to see the symantec name in the thread that crashed.

The third party software that I've installed has been minimal over the past 6 months. But I am not willing to do a reinstall. I had to do that late last year to get rid of Snow Leopard, which caused me major internet connectivity problems and it took forever. If it came down to having to do that, I will go back to my PC, which I am already seriously contemplating doing.

I use it for awhile until it inexplicably started crashing a lot. I have another thread on here in which I asked for advice choosing between the Pro and a HP Z 800. Right now, one of the reasons that the HP is in the lead in my mind is Apple's inability to play nice with Flash. Flash crashed Safari a lot and that was unacceptable to me. Right in the middle of listening to Pandora, or doing something important, boom, down it would go. I complained vehemently that for a company that claims their computers are ready to go out of the box, I didn't think I should have to spend time searching the net for something that would make Flash work. Like it or not, Flash is here to stay at least for awhile. I can't upgrade to a new computer that won't work with it.

The seven crashes on Safari exceeds my IE crashes by 6. And on my PC, I typically won't use IE, I instead use FF. But FF on my mac hasn't been immune to crashes either. Apple needs to work on their quality control before its too late.
 
I used to get the odd Safari crash but since I upgraded to Snow leopard I've had none at all. Seems pretty solid now.

The Flash plugin crashed once, but not the browser itself (neat feature that, because I suspect Flash was the culprit before).

I think that your best option is to un-install the Symantec Firewall since it seems to be the problem (and you don't need it on the Mac) - who told you to install it on the Mac in 1st place?
Don't try to blame your own mistakes on Apple.I don't have any problems with Safari in 10.5.x or 10.6.x. (But prefer to use FF because of their add-ons like Adblock Plus).
 
That's weird, 'cause I've used safari religiously for almost a month and have not had one crash. Maybe it has something to do with you installing another software or something?
 
Tons of port scans means nothing.

I would also eliminate anything Symantec. I have *never* seen either of those crash messages.

Your experience is *not* the norm.

Ive got Chrome, Safari, Camino, FF, Omniweb and Sunrise all running right now. I use each of them on a "per client" basis. One client per browser. Chrome and Safari have at least 3 windows and 30+ tabs. FF maybe half that. Sunrise 10 tabs in 2 windows. I use Omniweb exclusively for photo searching because of its thumbnail tab view. I use Camino for Hulu and Netflix only, about 8 tabs, each with different videos in them.

*rarely* does a browser crash. Chrome is the worst of the lot right now, after a bit it just stops responding. New tabs wont load and old ones just seem to be constantly refreshing. Does this have to do with Flash? Dunno. Doubt it.

Not a huge issue. Force quit, relaunch, restore, and 30 seconds later its like nothing ever happened.

It looks like Im not alone reading the other posts here?

Why don't you leave firewall task to your router. I believe most of modern router has firewall capability.
 
Man I hate Chrome it is so slow, Safari never crashes with me, I have tried firefox put have problems with pogo.com java not working, everything in Safari seems to work great. I use Snow Leopard and Safari Version 4.0.5 (6531.22.7)build.
