Well - I have been waiting and waiting for a potential iMac update. I finally had enough waiting, went to the Apple Store tonight and bought a 24" 2.4Ghz iMac. I'm super excited to start playing with it.

The guy that assisted me was pretty helpful. I asked him if I should go 2.4 or 2.8. He said he didn't think the 2.8 was worth it and to get a 2.4 and max out the RAM. I thought that was cool that he didn't try to upsell me. I asked him the same about Apeture 2 and he recommended iPhoto over it. Just thought that was refreshing given the nature of some sales folks.

Anyway, the iMac is still in the box. It was in the back of my car for a couple of hours and it's only about 30 degrees here. So, I'm letting it adapt to my indoor climate overnight and will set it up tomorrow after church. That's gonna be a long church service! ;)

Just a little note on Aperture. If you like to do a lot of editing with your photos or if you shoot in RAW format, then Aperture is excellent. Couple it with Photoshop and you'll have a stellar editing set-up. I shoot in RAW and iPhoto would never be able to do the things that Aperture does. I would assume Aperture 2 just has some nice upgrades (I use the original version).

Congrats! Glad you are happy with your purchase but you shouldn't be "happy" that the Apple employee didn't try to upsell you. That's a good thing that they try and upsell you, maybe there are features you may not realize a product can do for you but without them trying to upsell you will not know and you may find out later past your return period and then you'll be disappointed he didn't tell you about them.
Just because the Apple employee said the 2.8 model wasn't worth it doesn't mean it's not, unless he asked you what your needs were. At any rate congrats once again! :)

Fair points. We did have a brief conversation about my needs. I think he was just saying that in his opinion I would see more bang for the buck to get RAM for the 2.4 than to get the 2.8. Either way, I appreciated it. It's certainly a different experience than going in to a Best Buy or Circuit City. The Apple Store folks are typically more knowledgeable and don't just assume that the most expensive item is the best for you.

I have been considering Aperture for a while now as I shoot exclusively in RAW. I just got pushed off the fence by Aperture 2.0 and it should be here next week. I hear it was worth waiting for! :D

Wow, you have some patience there. I would not be able to wait. Actually, when I ordered my first Imac in October, I left work early just so I could go home and hook it up. :)

Congrats, you will love it.

:apple:

I'm still going to consider Aperture. I like the suggestion of getting PSP and Aperture for a powerful combination. I just need to learn more about it.

I have a new camera on the way and I know very little about SLR's or shooting in RAW format. Once I get more familiar with the camera etc, I'll make my decision.

Congrats! You will love it! I got one at work recently and everybody that comes by is s-o-o-o-o jealous.

I know exactly how you felt. Since its spring I was waiting for some announcement of upgraded imacs. In the end I gave up waiting and bought the 20". But knowing my luck give it another month or so and apple will release something new

you can use it now

that temperature difference isnt going to affect it...

it all depends on your humidity level. I took my new iMac out of my trunk in the summer and took it inside and unboxed it and it had condensation on it.

So I went from a hot trunk to a cool house and it sweated.

I would think if you went from cool trunk to warm house it would still sweat if the humidity in the house was high.

my iMac didn't do a 'smoke check' when I plugged it in but it did have the 'freezing' issue. Was the freezing issue related to the condensation...I doubt it but I also don't know if there was condensation on the inside of the unit either.
