Please point me elsewhere if I'm in the wrong place.

I have a 15" titanium 1.67 GHz PowerPC G4, 512 MB DDR SDRAM, OS X 10.3.9

I want to be able to rip and backup my CD collection, but my G4 intermittently plays my CDs with audio glitches that sound rather like what happens with scratched CDs; these glitches also appear in ripped files. The playback problems happen in iTunes, Real Player and Audion, though not consistently – there seem to be more in iTunes and fewer in Audion.

When I say the problem is intermittent, it seems to appear after I've ripped a few CDs, not at the start of a ripping session. I go back to the computer the next day, and it starts off fine again. Could this mean that the CD drive goes funny when it gets hotter?? Or is it something to do with memory?? Is there anything I can do?

Thanks for any suggestions.
