Tizen on the Gear S3

So...

The Gear S3 Frontier is on 2.3.2.
The most recent version is 3.0.
The next version is due in September (4.0).

Am I right so far?

If so, why is the watch not getting updates?
 
No idea...

But tbh I'm not that bothered. It's working perfectly well, only one or two very minor gripes.

Some major improvements that we could expect with the update are better syncing over Bluetooth and WiFi with the smartphone, smoother UI and a new system wide theme that we have seen on the Gear Sport, better battery life, real-time heart rate monitoring, accurate activity tracking. The last set of features that could come with Tizen 3.0 is the ability to control Samsung IoT-enabled devices through Samsung Connect and being used as a controller for the Gear VR.

Battery life on this thing is great. I'm on Tizen 3.0. Two days in, and I'm still at 41%.

Not right. They started to push out 3.0 and then pulled it back. Not heard anything about 4.0. I think that is probably at least a year off. I am frankly happy they pulled back 3.0 to make sure its right, before continuing to deploy it. My Gear S3 works great and I don't want that screwed up by them pushing out a buggy release 3 or 4 times to get it right, like Apple seems to do now.

What reason? They are not pushing out an update until its working correctly. That to me is a positive, not a negative. Rotating dial for navigation and Samsung Pay are great advantages, so I'll wait for the release. I like it the way it is, so if it never gets updated I'd be OK with that too.

I get that it’s fun to bring up Apple in threads that aren’t about them, but when Samsung did push out 3.0 it apparently killed everybody’s battery life. They’re now pushing out an update to fix that. So maybe some snark about it, okay?

Never had an issue with battery life after updating to 3.0. But let's be honest, the people that complained about battery drain were still getting decent battery life compared to Apple Watch and Android Wear users. They were just so used to getting world dominating battery life, that anything less was unacceptable. Any other OEM wishes they had the Gear's handicapped battery life. Lol
And the great thing about these updates is that you get a full update that doesn't hold back any functionality that a new released watch gets. Nothing is slowed down in any way.

We have reports of people losing 80/90 percent in a day. So no, it isn’t dominating anything.
 
Mine can end the day on 40ish percent or 70ish percent.
It depends on how much activity is going on and whether I have the always on display on, which I usually do.
I charge mine nightly.

Right after the 3.0 update, battery life was crap but it was only crap for a few days...

Not sure about it killing "everybody's" battery life. I constantly hear bashing of Samsung on this forum for being slow to do updates compared to Apple, so just sharing my opinion that I'd rather it get here later and work correctly than get here quickly and require multiple updates to fix it.

I have a Gear S3 on ATT. It has gotten one or two updates the entire time I’ve had it. Please forgive me if I’m not so forgiving for them being slow to update and still releasing bad ones.

That’s the magic thing, I haven’t yet. But if ATT hasn’t pushed out 3.0 yet I’m weary about how long it’s going to take them to push out the patch that was sent out by Samsung to fix the initial problem.

It was never pushed to any carrier, which is why you didn't get it. It was pushed out to Bluetooth only watches briefly, and then pulled back because of an issue. Personally, I'd rather this than them pushing it out to everyone and then having a broken watch until they fixed it.

I agree, but there was a year and a half between 2.4 and 3.0 and roughly half a year between 3.0 being released and it being put on wearables. I would have hoped that the almost two years between starting to work on 3.0 and actually putting it on the S3 would lead to this sort of thing not happening.

Gotcha... I am just happy with the S3 and hope they don't do anything to mess it up.
 
I love my Gear S3. I've typically worn big rugged ABC watches like Suunto and Casio Pathfinders. So the Gear S3 is nowhere near a big watch for me. In fact, I hope they go with a 1.6 inch screen on the Gear S4. I would upgrade without hesitation if that happened.
