Ihave a Mac Pro 5.1, 12-core 3.46 Westmere. I just bought 128gb of 1333 ddr3 ram for it, but it shows as being 800mhz only. I contacted the seller of the ram. Read what he said below. Is this correct and is there a way I can bring it up to 1333mhz? I took out half and it still says 800. I took out all but one 16gb unit and it says 1066mhz.

“Mac Pros will lower the speed of your memory if all of the slots are filled due to the design of the board.”

A PRAM reset may allow your cMP run 96GB at 1333MHz, but the chance that can run all 128GB at 1333MHz is low.

Thanks .I`ll give that a try! 96gb at 1333 or 128gb at 800. Any idea what might work better for video editing. Final Cut Pro X?

I can say that for at least 75% of the work I do in After Effects CC 2019, 128GB of RAM is utilized. Very often cross that threshold where the more RAM vs. less and "faster" spec makes a real-world difference. Premiere Pro seems to use less RAM, but I honestly do not keep tabs on memory usage with that as much since the workflow is much more GPU dependent. During timeline renders with multiple stacked effects, masks, tracks, etc. it does seem to make a big difference.

As for your clock speeds, I cannot comment about 800mhz. I've only used RAM at 1333mhz in my Mac Pro 5,1 (currently at 128GB). Have used 1066mhz in other Mac Pro machines (not my personal) and have never noticed a tangible slow-down in workflow.
