Has anyone ever heard of TNT Postal?

I am trying to purchase a laptop from somebody located in the UK, and she suggested that we use this service. Supposedly, they are a third party that holds both the item and the money, verifies that everything is on the up and up, and completes the transaction.

I know theres a lot of people from the UK on these forums, and a lot of people who do international business. What's the word on TNT? Obviously, I'm looking to avoid scam here...

Why o why would you purchase from somebody out of the country and send to "their" escrow agent? Unless you use eBay, their escrow and a credit card.

TNT is a legit service, I doubt they offer escrow services ... but the scammers do, and collecting from them is hard.

TNT is a legitimate UK delivery company (albeit a slightly crap one) but they are only a delivery company and as far as I know don't offer an escrow service (i.e. offer to hold item and money and verify them both).

Googling "TNT escrow" brings up some very dodgy links and desciptions of scams – I'd keep well away from this seller if if I were you. It may be there has been some kind of misunderstanding - as I say, TNT are a legit international carrier, but the offer to hold the laptop and money sounds really dodgy to me.

My mistake: the way that the woman described the service was more along the lines of "Cash on Delivery," she claimed that I would receive the package and have a chance to make sure that it is what I was hoping for before paying for it.

Upon inspection of the website, I see no such service outlined...

Do they do this?

How does the package arrive at my door in the US? UPS? USPS? DHL? FEDEX? All of these details seem very murky, I appreciate all of the help from you guys.

Total scam, was this by chance a Craigslist listing where the listing was local but when she contacted you she had moved to the UK? Avoid this deal even if it does not match my description exactly.

I could be a scam. But: do you have to pay import duties? If you do, TNT does all the paperwork and advances the fees to the Customs Office. They bill you upon delivery. That's what they do in my country.

It could be legitimate..

TNT is a real company and actually it is one of the bigger companies in Europe. Cash on Delivery: she could mean something like rembours, which means that you pay on delivery to the deliveryguy. I seem to remember that there are maximum limits on the amount you could pay and I'm pretty sure that you cannot inspect the package before payment. It also means that you pay a fee to use this service.

I'm actually doubting whether this service of TNT is provided in the US, so it might be a good idea to proceed with caution.

The bitch is still at it

Goes by the name of Susan out here in Oregon... but luckily I did my homework and find you here. It sure was a little fishy right from the start but when I got the email about sending it from the UK and all that it was just like my leg was being pulled a little to far. I almost convinced myself that there was a glimmer of hope but it is too good to be true, and now I see you talking about the same exact ad from a couple of months back. Sad to see it happening, I usually like to trust people.

Hello,
First of all I'm sorry for the delay, but I had a lot of work to do ... As you have seen in the ad, that the apartment is located in 140 Riverside Boulevard New York, NY 10069, on the 5th floor of Trump Place. The number of the apartment is 5c. It has 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, 1 kitchen and 1 living room (1447sq feet).
I'm the owner of the apartment and I'm looking forward to rent it as soon as possible, because my company has won the auction for a project, in construction, for a building that will rise up in London, United Kingdom. I am a civil engineer, so my accommodation period in UK will be about 4 years. The renting period is from 1 months up to 4 years. As a result of this I want to rent it, for this period, at this price and also to find the perfect person for my apartment.
The apartment is furnished, but I have the option of sending all my furniture into storage if you want to bring your own (no extra costs). The rent for 1 month is $1,200 (for the whole apartment; money is not really a big problem for me; i just want to find the proper tenant; somenone who will treat and care my apartment like it was his own) including all utilities (water, electricity, Internet, cable, parking, air conditioning, fireplace, dishwasher, garbage disposal, microwave, refrigerator). You can move in the apt in the same day when you receive the keys. The only problem is that I`m the only person who has the keys but I hope that we will find a solution.

Thank you for your interest and I will look forward to hearing from you soon.

Good luck,
Raffaela
P.S. Please tell me if this is what are you looking for and reply my only if you are truly interested in the apt.

Hi again,

Thank you for your reply but the matter is that I'm in London already. I know that a deal face to face it's the best, but since I am here this is not possible, I've just arrived here, in UK, The matter is that I want to start a new life here, I am divorced, had a lot of problems in my marriage , well I don't want to discuss this problems, but in 5 years I will decide if I will keep that apt, and get back to US or if I will sell it and move forever in UK.
Like I have informed you before, the price you will pay for one month of rent will be $1200 US, with no extra taxes to pay. As for the money, I want to revive it monthly to my bank account, so I hope it will be no problem for you to wire the money to my bank account. The apartment is ready for you, you will only need to receive the keys and the contract to check it, and see if you like it.
Obviously we need a way to complete this deal, that will allow us to make sure we receive what we are after. I asked one of my friens to help me find a company ave found a way for us to complete the deal safely and fast, and in this way you will receive the Keys in less than 2 days, if you move fast as well. The solution is provided by a company called TNT which is similar to FedEx, DHL or UPS, which will handle both payment and delivery of the Keys.
I have found a procedure that will allow you to pay for the rent of the apt only after you will receive the keys of it and through this way you will see it and decide if you will stay in the apt or not before I receive my payment. Please click on the link bellow to the TNT website to see how we can complete the deal safely and fast directly from the website of the
company where the procedure is explained:
http://www.tnt.com/country/en_generic/services/spe cial_services/timecritical.html
Let me know if you are interested please because I really need to take care of this matter by the end of this week or the beginning of the next one.
Thanks,
Raffaela

TNT - Craigslist Total SCAM!

I found an apartment too good to be true on Craigslist yesterday. I thought it sounded a little fishy when the owner told me that she was out of the country and I'd have to wire her $$ if I decided to take it. I did a little research and have found the same email on this forum!! See the two emails she sent me today:

------------------------------------
Hi there,

Thank you for your interest. From the craigslist add, you could see, that the apartment located in: St Nicholas Ave / 119th & 120th (MANHATTAN - Central Harlem, NY) . It has 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, 1 kitchen and 1 living room (1500sq feet).
I am Mental Health Therapist, working with individuals with dual diagnosis and humanitarian officer involved in projects that includes orphans, orphanages, with heart related diseases in children between the ages of 4-10yrs, so my accommodation period in UK will be about 4 years. The renting period is from 3 months upto 4 years. As a result of this I want to rent, for this period, at this price and also to find the perfect person for my apartment. I`m the owner of the apt and it's like in the pics.
The apartment is furnished, but I have the option of sending all my furniture into storage if you want to bring your own (no extra costs). The rent for 1 month is US $ 900 (for the whole apartment) including all utilities (water, electricity, Internet, cable, parking, air conditioning, fireplace, dishwasher, garbage disposal, microwave, refrigerator). You can move in the apt in the same day when you receive the keys. The only problem is that I`m the only person who has the keys but I hope that we will find a solution.

Thank you for your interest and I will look forward to hearing from you soon.

Good luck,

TNT scam still active in Eugene, OR Craigslist

I got this reply today after requesting more information about a MacBook Pro for $530 with 8Gb of ram. It sounded too good to be true and it was.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi,

The MacBook Pro is still available, but I'm currently in London, England. Because of the financial crisis, I lost my job in United States and I had to move at my sister in United Kingdom ( here I found a good job ) .
The laptop is in perfect condition, and I will sell it only in US because here the warranty and the AppleCare are US registered. I am selling the laptop because I don't use it anymore. I work a lot with Windows XP Pro and this one can't run this Operating System.
Cick here : Apple_MacBook_Pro_5.3 to see some pics with the laptop so you can see the condition of the laptop. I bought the laptop 10 months ago and it still has 2 years and 2 months of Apple transferable warranty remaining ( you can extend the warranty for one year on your name ).
I hope you are still interested and we can make the deal happen right away.
Since I can't meet you and make the exchange, I would like to use a service that will help us with that:

http://www.tnt.com/tnt.express.london.depot/third_party_service.html

TNT is a worldwide delivery company (like Fedex, DHL or UPS). You can see from their procedure that you will be able to check the laptop before I receive the payment. If you are in a hurry, I will use 2 day delivery (on my expense).

Let me know what you think.

Best Wishes,
Brenda

Hi Michael,

Well, I found a way to sell the laptop that will be safe for both of us. It's a worldwide delivery company called TNT. They have a service that will allow you to test the laptop before I receive my payment.
Please go to the TNT website below and read their procedure so we can be on the same page:

I will pay the TNT shipping fee.
If you agree to their terms please send me your name and address and I will start the delivery procedure.

I don't need the laptop anymore so I tried to sell it locally, but with no luck. I was offered silly money for the laptop because of issues like - it is a US version or the warranty doesn't work here or that it has a US keyboard format. That's why I'm trying my luck in the US.
I hope you are still interested. The laptop was bought brand new from Best Buy a 10 weeks ago. I have attached some pics with it to this email.
About the laptop I can say it is 10 weeks old and it is in good shape, no scratches, no dents as you can see from the pics I've sent. Included in the $580 price is everything the laptop came with when it was new, including the original manuals and warranty papers. The warranty is fully transferable to the new owner.
The laptop is here with me in UK.
I tried to be as thorough as I could with the presentation so you can have all the info if you decide to go ahead and buy it.
Please get back to me and let me know if you like the laptop if you're really interested in buying it.

Thanks,
Bianca

cant believe i most fell for it

Mine was a renting scam similar to one mentioned above by this so-called Michael Williams. I reported his email to yahoo.ca as well as the two websites he posted the ad on. I find it hilarious how the wording is exactly the same

1st email reply:
Hello Geenie,

I hope this email finds you well. The apartment is located at 17 Knightsbridge Road, Brampton, ON L6P 1A1. It has 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom, 1 kitchen and 1 living room at $744 per month (below market value) in return for taking good care of the place. I am looking for someone who will be careful and thoughtful to live in it, as soon as possible, because I have recently suffered a divorced and I will move back home in Cambridge, England. The lease can be for a minimum 3 months. I'm the full right owner of the apartment and the utilities aren't included in this price (rent/month), utilities are about $40.00-$60.00/month. Everything in this apt is functional because is recently renovated.
Just to mention a few, it includes: (refrigerator, washer/dryer and most important a parking place.). I would also like to know how many persons will occupy the apartment and for how long would like to sign the rent contract. (any pets? cats or dogs?). Unfortunately I, have the keys no one else have access in the apartment because it is a private property.

Thank you for your interest and wait news from you.

2nd email:
Hello Gennie,

Thank you for your response. Like I have informed you before, the price you have to pay for one month of rent will be $744. We can start with a basic 1 year contract with the possibility of renewing it or with the period of time suitable for you. About the payment, I would like to receive it monthly into my bank account and I hope there will be no problem for you to wire the money to it. You only need to receive the keys and the contract so you could check out the apt, and see if you like it.
Since I'm Cambridge we need a way to complete this deal that will allow us to make sure we receive what we are asking for. I have found a way for us to complete the deal safely that will allow you to pay for the rent only after you will receive the keys and rental contract, you can receive them in less than 2 days. The solution is provided by a third party company called TNT Global Air Express which is similar to FedEx, DHL or UPS, and will handle the payment and delivery of the Keys.
Through this service you will see the apt and decide if you like it or not, before sending the payment. Please click on the link bellow to see how we can complete the deal safely and fast directly from the web site of the company where this procedure is explained:

http://www.tnt.com/express/en_gb/si...ces/international_time_critical_services.html

If you don't see the link, or if you click on the link and it appears broken, please copy and paste the URL into a new browser window.

3rd email reply(in which I emailed him asking to set up a phone call appt, where you can see that he completely ignored my request?!):
Hello again,

If you are ready to proceed with this transaction I will explain you step by step how this process will work and how we can make it happen. You will only have to deposit to the Escrow Service TNT the first month of rent $744 so they can proceed with the shipping. I will pay for a 2 days delivery so you will receive the keys and the contract signed by me right away.

1 - To start the process first of all I need is your full shipping info.
2 - I will go at TNT to deposit the keys and the contract in your name as the intended receiver.
3 - TNT will check the envelope to see if everything is in order and also the legal papers that will come along with the keys and proof of ownership.
4 - TNT will send you a delivery notification to let you know they have the keys and the papers in their custody and that I am the real owner of the apartment I am renting, in which you will also have all the instructions to complete the Western Union transfer to the TNT Agent.
5 - At this point you will have to go to a Western Union Location and make a money deposit on the TNT Agent Name for the amount we agreed, the total amount you shall deposit for the first month of rent.
6 - After you make the deposit you will have to send the transfer information to TNT (not to me).
7 - TNT will verify the payment information and if everything is in order they will proceed with the delivery of the keys and the contract.
8 - After you receive the package, you will go and check the apartment and in 2 days you must contact TNT to inform them if you keep the apt or not. If all is in order you will instruct TNT to send me the information about the money deposit and I will be able to receive the funds. If you don`t like the apartment you can ask for a full refund and you will send back the keys and contract. Also pay the Western Union transfer fees from the total amount you need to deposit and send the rest in balance.

Let me know if we can do this and e-mail me all your full name and shipping info so we can proceed with this deal.

Thats what made it really sketchyyy. Since when does western union give refunds lol and if it was legit a phone call wouldnt have been too much to ask. And then i did my research and thank god saved myself from being scammed!!

I am a civil engineer, so my accommodation period in England will be about 4 years. I don't want to make a business or a profit with the apartment. Just want to find a good and trust person to take good care of the place because I really love it. I`m the owner of the apt and it's like in the pics.
The rent for 1 month is $6,000 pesos (for the whole apartment) including all utilities (water, electricity, Internet, cable, 2 parking spots indoor, air conditioning, dishwasher, garbage disposal, microwave, refrigerator, stove, laundry in-suite, washer and dryer). Everything in this apt is functional because is recently renovated. If you need to do some reparations (the worst case that could happen) in the apartment, I will cover the reparations cost, or I will deduct those from monthly payment. You can move in the apt in the same day when you receive the keys. The only problem is that I`m the only person who has the keys because it is a private property but I hope that we will find a compromise.
If you have any other questions please contact me back by e-mail.

Thank you for your interest and awaiting your reply,
Perez Rubio Blanca Patricia

Hello,

Thank you for your reply but the matter is that I'm in London already. Like I have informed you before, the price you shall pay for one month of rent will be $6,000 pesos, plus the security deposit $6,000 pesos so the total will be $12.000 pesos, including all utilities & community with no extra fees for the duration of the contract.
After that the rent will be $6,000 pesos every month. The security deposit if you want can be used to pay the last month of rent or in the situation if you don't have money, will be used as payment for the current month, with your prior confirmation or refundable at the end of the contract.
About the money, I would like to receive it monthly into my bank account and I hope there will be no problem for you to wire the money to it. The apartment is ready for you, you only need to receive the keys and the contract so you could check it out, and see if you like it.
Obviously we need a way to complete this deal, that will allow us to make sure we receive what we are after. In order of that I have found a way for us to complete the deal safely and fast, and in this way you will receive the Keys in less than 2 days, if you move fast as well. The solution is provided by a company called TNT which is similar to FedEx, DHL or UPS, which will handle the payment and delivery of the Keys.
I have found a procedure that will allow you to pay for the rent of the apartment only after you will receive the keys, and through this way you will see it and decide if you will stay in the apartment or not before I receive my payment.
Let me know if you are interested, because I really need to take care of this matter by the end of next week.

Hola,

Hello XXXXXX,

I want to inform you that TNT will hold the money until you will confirm to them that you like the apt and keep the keys. If you don't like it, you only have to return the keys to them after they will refund the money to you and they will deliver the keys back to me on my expense.
I will need to inform you the steps about how this service works and how we can make it happen. You will only have to deposit to TNT Service - 1 month is $6,000 pesos plus the deposit $6,000 pesos so the total will be $12.000 pesos- so they can proceed with the shipping, and you can receive the keys and the contract.
Like I said, I will pay for a 2 days delivery so you will receive the Keys and the contract signed by me right away. I will explain to you step by step how this will work:
1 - To start this transaction i will need to know your full shipping information, full name, full shipping address to proceed with this deal .
2 - I go to the TNT Office and leave the Keys and the contract in your name as thE intended receiver.
3 - TNT will check the envelope to see if everything is OK with it and also the legal papers that will come along with the Keys.
4 - TNT will send you a delivery notification to let you know they have the Keys and the papers in their custody, in which you will be told that they have the Keys and that they checked it.
5 - At this point you will have to go to a WesternUnion Agent Location and make a money transfer deposit on the TNT agent name in London assigned with this transaction for the amount we agreed, the total amount you shall deposit is for the first month of rent.
6 - After you make the deposit you will have to send the infos about the money deposit to TNT (MTCN#, sender's name and address)
7 - TNT will verify the payment informations and if everything is in order they will deliver the Keys and the contract to you .
8 - After you receive the package, You will go and check the apt and in 2 days you must contact them and tell them if you keep the apt or not, if everything is in order you will instruct TNT to release the funds to me.
If you don't like the apt they will send your money back and you will send them the keys and the contract to them to return the package back to me on my expense.I will pay TNT Service for the shipping and you will pay WesternUnion for the Money Transfer fees. Now i must know for sure if you agree becauSe here are a lot of peoples interested to have this apartment rented and i want to know for sure what i must tell them. If you agree what i suggested i will tell them that my apartment is already rented and i will keep it for you. If you agree then i must have all the shipping details so i will be able to make all the arrangements for the TNT delivery.
