I currently have an IBook G4 1GHz, and I'm getting a MB this summer. I don't have the budget for an MBP (although I want one...) but I wanted some advice on which MB to get: The crappy white one, the decent white one, or the pwnage black one? I have a limited budget but I need to know which one is best for my interests:

1)GAMING (w/ Bootcamp)
2)Video/Picture/Audio editing
3)Programming (w/ Bootcamp)

PLEASE HELP!!!!

I'd personally get the decent white one. Upgrade the HD if you want to.

If you want to seriously game often, a Macbook isn't a real good choice. It doesn't have a graphics card. I'd wait until Santa Rosa comes out with the improved Intel Graphics chipset (Crestline).

Well if you get the black one make sure you keep your hands clean! They mark easily. But anyway i'd prob go for the mid range white MB and load it up with as much extras as you can. Altho maybe you should pass on filling the MB up with ram from the Apple store. They charge you alot extra. You can buy more on some online stores for much cheaper. 1gb is fast but 2gb is insanely fast if you can afford it

Wow! That was some fast replying! Thanks a lot guys, I was thinking the second white one too, but I needed some confirmation from experts.

Also, I'm not really a serious gamer (12 yrs. old lol) but I like having an mmo an rts and a few fps's I can play without a controller and a tv.

I think it's silly to get a BlackBook because you can bring the "better" white configuration up to the BlackBook's specs and it'll be about $50 less ($80 if you're a student, government worker, etc.) Plus, I've heard bad things about the black casing.

Let's face it, neither of them is made of great laptop-suitable material. The white one scratches if you breath on it and the black smudges if you breath on it, not to mention will peel if you use it too much. Quite a few users of the white one have had cracks happen in the same place, while the black ones seem to have not.

There are clear trade-offs with both.

As for paying more. Yes, you do, but get it through amazon and the blakc one is $1399 - that's not too bad if you like black, is it? You do get a larger hdd after all....

Having seen my friends black MacBook in person, I must say it is very cool looking, and I like it more then my white one. However, being a 15 year old who could barely afford the MacBook as it is, I couldn't justify spending an extra $150 on a new color.

I just made that same purchase. I picked up the 2.0ghz White and then upgraded the HD and the Ram and I could not be happier.

I got the HD from newegg for 104.95 (WD 160gig)

I got the 2gig kit from Crucial for 166.18
So my total.

Base machine 1299.99 - 100(student discount)

HD 104.95
Ram 166.18

Total inc. tax 1573.03

Leaving me with a spare 80gig drive installed in an external sata 2.5 case
and an extra gig of ram

The black would have cost me 1791.18 both machines include tax and a 100 discount for students

Very happy with this machine.

I can't stand the smudging problem with the black MB, but I love it other than that issue. Everything else about it is great. It serves me well for my gaming purposes, though I am far from hardcore.

Why not the refurb C2D macbook pro? It has the 128 graphics card and is near the price of the blackbook (1599).

For me it was all about the size of the laptop. The smaller the better otherwise I likely wouldnt carry it all that much.

My black MacBook is fantastic. I got a MarWare wristpad cover for it and it's in a clear Speck shell... can't beat it. No real marks anywhere on it even though it's been heavily abused int he short while I've owned it (I bike a lot, and it lives in my bag with big books and food!).

Trust me, once you've gone black, well, let me let him say it:

Buy the black one from Amazon (free shipping, no tax, and $100 rebate)

I'm finding the 120 gigs makes a big difference. Buying the white one and upgrading works too, but its a lot of hassle over not a lot of money, even if you are on a budget. Besides, Amazon makes the black one more competitive by giving it a better rebate.
