I currently have a Macbook Pro, Late 2011 model, 2.4 Ghz i5 processor 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3. I mostly use the computer for web browsing and work which require open VPN and citrix clients. I noticed a generalized slowdown of my computer with years and certain things weren't functioning anymore within the OS. I did a factory reset on the device and started over which helped some but the slow usage is still noticeable and I can no longer update the computer to the newest operating system.
I am basically your granma when it comes to computers so very low level of knowledge.
I'm considering buying the new Macbook Air but I don't understand the speed difference between my current macbook and the Macbook air 2022, given that the specs look the same on the surface. I would get the i5 2020 processor again but i can;t really tell how much faster that is compared to the old version and whether the upgrade is worth it since the current computer gets the job done, albeit with a bit of a lag.

Geekbench is a good source for comparing raw performance https://browser.geekbench.com/mac-benchmarks . The specs can be a bit confusing because the clock speeds may seem similar & they both have i5. However the 2011 generation i5 is way slower than the 2020. And clock speed alone doesn't tell the whole story, you also have other components like HD vs SSD and bus speeds. But in any case it doesn't seem like you're doing anything super-intense? No video rendering or heavy photo editing? And your Macbook Pro 2011 is not the fastest, even in 2011. So the new Air will be faster. Plus it has a way better screen, the finger print reader, fast SSD, and it's lighter. It will be better in many ways. If you're worried about it or if i'm wrong about your usage, consider the Macbook Pro 13, it is a bit faster than the air (but the keyboard is the older butterfly). If it were me, i'd go with the air.
