To buy or not to buy MacBook?

Hey all,

I bought a iBook 14" 1.42 Ghz in January. I upgraded the memory to 1GB, bought an iSkin and a LaRobe case. The computer has been great and I like it a lot. Since the MacBooks got released I have been thinking of selling it however as I am elligable for the HE Educational Discount and I can get:

The £749 one for £643 (£106 difference) and the £899 one for £773.00 (£126 difference). I think I want the 2Ghz model as I really need a SuperDrive as I make a lot of DVDs etc.

I would sell my iBook on eBay and it was recently my birthday so I have an additional £240 of funds to put towards it.

I just don't know if I can justify it. I would really like photobooth and front row and the widescreen, and the gained speed, and the lighter weight and more compact size but I don't feel I can justify it as my current laptop does everything I need it to, and it's only 6 months old.

I could probably get £600 at least for my current laptop as I would be selling it with the box, disks, iSkin and LaRobe case.

What do you think I should do?

As you are at Uni, save the money for necessaries and keep the iBook. Yes the macbook is awesome but only buy it if you sell the ibook for however much you are willing to buy the macbook for so you are not essentially spending any money.

Today when I was polishing my shoes, I managed to flick some shoe polish onto the iBook. It wasn't coming off, so I got some nail varnish remover and it came off, but I accidently went over part of the 'iBook G4' bit and some of the 'iB' has came off. It is really bothering me now (although it doesn't affect the computer).

You can get more than £600 for your laptop on ebay.

I just sold my iBook G4 12inch 1.33ghz 1gb RAM Combo (latest rev) for £620 on ebay when I got it for £600 with my NUS discount so I used it for 6 months and got my money back.....

I have now placed an order for a MacBook (sig) which cost me £673 with my NUS discount....

Isnt it great how Mac's hold there value

I say don't buy an Intel Mac until they come with Leopard but that's just me.

Well in saying that - I never paid £899 for my iBook it only cost me £742 (I got it without VAT). How much do you think I would get for it on eBay?

Is memory and harddrive upgrades much cheaper for students?

I don't think you get much of an education discount on Memory or other upgrades, but one thing to keep in mind is that Intel will be releasing a whole new line of mobile chips this year. If you like your ibook and it works okay it might be a good idea to wait.
