To dive into the MBP now, or to wait...?

I am right now a PC user but am deathly sick of Windows and all other PC hinderances. So right now I'm really thinking hard about getting a MBP soon. My dad needs a new laptop, so I would give him mine as a hand-me-down, but my question is: should I wait for the Merom chip/Leopard to come out or should I just take a Yonah MBP that would be somewhat reliable because it has been a while since they came out?

It isn't extremely important that he have my laptop soon, but I definitely would like to pick up a Mac. Any advice? Should I order one now or would it be wise to wait on Merom/Leopard?

If you want/need one now, it is a good machine. If you want to wait, there will ALWAYS be new machines coming out shortly...the question then is, how long do you want to wait?

I was in your situation 2 weeks ago. I switched over cause PC sucks and I needed a laptop desperately... i got a barely used G4 PB 17" off Ebay and love it. I always believe in waiting. You can probably get a great deal on Ebay on a new G4 PB.

I plan to sell my G4 later on and then get the 2nd generation MPB after Apple has sorted out the intial problems. I've always be advised never to buy first generation Apple.

but then again, if you are the type that must get the newest thing, then forget my advice.

I know, every few months theres something new. But this is different, this is between buying a Rev A product of a completely new kind to buying its much more reliable successor.

It's not even a matter of speed and performance anymore, it's a matter of how many problems you're willing to put up with.

I received my MBP (2.0 GHz 15") today and it runs a heap cooler than my PowerBook G4. I had it running all day at work flogging the CPU and it never approached anything I'd consider hot. I'm sorry your machine runs hot but to the OP don't take someones face as a reason not to buy 1 they are amazing machines.

You might just be right. Me too heard from someone that her MBP doesnt get hot at all. Though I couldnt believe it at first. . But Now it seems Apple really has fixed something and the heat is not anymore that bad. She also has the newer MBP with a 2.16Ghz Processor.

But I`d still vote for waiting for 2 months if possible. You`ll get a new faster/cooler processor for the same price. But wait only if possible. The OP seems to need the MBP right now. It is a very good machine. Definitely go for it if you need it right now.

Also why not run a poll instead. Ask everyone who`s got the newer MBPs(the ones which became available with the MBs) if there are any heat/whinning issues. You`ll definitely get a good idea if somthing has been changed really.

Yours doesn't run hot at all. I think you already have a rev B. then. I've yet to see any high end laptop that didn't get hot where the battery is at when under heavy loads.

I would wait til the WWDC August before buying a MBP now. They might be due for replacement by then.

Ask everyone who`s got the newer MBPs(the ones which became available with the MBs) if there are any heat/whinning issues.

This is the model I have (2.0 GHz, 120 GB HDD, 2 GB RAM) and other than the fans (which I can only hear if I put my ear near the case) this thing makes no noise at all, I haven't heard anything like the mooing noise people talk about on these forums the fan noise just seems to be constant.

I copied a 1.4 GB file from DVD-R to the HDD and I couldn't hear the drive or the HDD churning over at all, I am sure I could of if I put my ear closer to the machine; but at normal distance this machine is dang quiet. Heaps quieter than my PowerBook G4, and as I say above heaps cooler too.

I wont lie it does get warm but nowhere near hot and nothing like the heat from my PowerBook G4 which if I was flogging the CPU I couldn't lift the machine up from the bottom. I flogged the CPU for a whole work day yesterday (say 7 hours) and when I put my hand near the bottom of the case sure it was warm but I had no problem touching the bottom it wasn't hot at all.

That is my experience with the current MacBook Pros I can't fault mine at all, it is the best notebook I've ever owned.
