Okay this is how it went for me, and I've had mine for three days:
Received my Macbook Pro 15.4" 2.16 GHz on Tuesday morning (May 30). Gushed over the packaging, the design of the actual laptop, OS X, etc. You've seen the nerdy photos everyone else took so I won't bore you. The serial number looks like this: W86210******.
Set it up and immediately checked for heat and whine issue. Suckage. Both were there.
Tried the Photobooth fix. Worked, but having the iSight camera light on all the time is kinda creepy. Tried the mirror fix, but yet again, means iSight camera has to be on all the time.
Tried the Kext fix. I just opted to delete the entire file instead of editing it. (Make sure you archive the file somewhere safe just in case.) Repaired permissions, rebooted. Worked like a champ! No more whine!
...Except the battery lost about 20 minutes. And it got WAY HOT.
Did this for a few hours, decided I could live with the heat. My last laptop was an HP ze53whatever and it sounded like a 777 taking off when idle, and the heat on that sucker would make an MBP look arctic.
Decided that night I wanted to go back to the old setup, the way it came from the factory, and wait for some sort of fix from Apple. Restored the Kext file, repaired permissions, rebooted, AND THE WHINE WAS STILL GONE!!! And heat is no longer an issue.
I've tried to get the whine to come back by doing various things including begging and doing a Native American MBP Whine Dance, but nothing brings it back, and I've got the Kext file right where it was originally. I have no idea about the heat issue. I've tried running the processors up really high, and yes the sucker does get hot, but nowhere near untolerable, and nowhere near my old HP zeWhatever.
So battery power is normal, heat is normal, but whine is GONE! :O
It's been this way for a whole 24 hours, so naysayers can shut up. If you've been worrying about whether to get one because of the whine, I say whip out the plastic and go for it, and just try the method I used.
Disclaimer: This worked for me. I am not you. Therefore it might not work for you. So you can't sue me. But seriously dude, stop being a puss, and just buy the damn Macbook Pro. It's amazing.
