To iphone or not to iphone?

I currently own a touch and I am enjoying the limited features.....I am deeply disappointed that in 2 years..that is still what it is.

It is time to upgrade phones and I am considering the iphone as a heavy player.

My situation is....is it worth the extra 25bucks per month (FAN discount on data plan) for an iPhone. There is wifi at my college and home....however not at our family business.

The iphone lacks so much (as does the touch) and I have been wishing that sdk would be opened up sometime soon due to competition but it hasn't. I am hoping that in the future, I will be able to play most types of media.

Should I jump the gun? I feel it isn't worth it but I want it. Then I will end up disappointed because I will not have gained much.

If you already have a phone and a camera and don't need to put it all in one device, I'd recommend you don't do it as you will be dissappointed while spending an extra $200/300 + iPhone plan per month.

I would say, too, that you ought not to purchase it yet. I own the 3G, having made the purchase based on the experience of two friends who were happy with it.

My own use is very heavy on making phone calls while in the car, and while out in fairly rural areas, where not only is 3G non-existent, but the AT&T network reads "No Service" for many miles at a time, even on major rural highways. This, combined with no integrated voice dialing, leaves me without a functioning cell phone for hours at a time.

(By the way, I have purchased, loaded, and played with all the voice dial apps, to no avail. Each app has fatal flaws, even after much tweaking of my contacts. When the standard of comparison is my little ol' Verizon Razr, the iPhone doesn't even register as a cell phone, unfortunately.) If your situation and needs are different, you may love the iPhone. My two friends still love theirs.

Why do you want one so much? If it's just for bling you will regret it. I love my iPhone, but it sounds like you should probably hold off if you're not happy with the touch. The iPhone won't add much to the experience.

Do you carry your iPod around AND your phone? If so, the iPhone is a natural replacement. I think a lot of people overlook the convergence factor. For some of us, the value of having everything in ONE device is a key advantage for the iPhone.

The cost of the Data plan is a bug deterrent though. I think apple would sell even more iPhones if you didn't have to get the data plan, and could rely on wi-fi when it was available.

That said, I have had an iPhone for going on 16 months now, and I wouldn't switch to another device. Because I am not willing to give up iTunes and my iPod, the iPhone is the only choice for a phone and MP3 player...

Yes, I carry both around. I keep a lot of word documents and pdfs on the touch and view them on-the-fly which is great.

Having one device do it all is a great thing but I am not sure if the data plan is worth it or not. I would basically be giving At&t 25bucks per month because I would only need the internet in a few locations (maybe at someone's house and they don't have wireless).

I am not disappointed with the ipod touch itself...just how Apple controls it.
I've got a lot of AVIs sitting on my laptop and to watch them on the touch..I have to encode them. This is something that disappoints me.

Then they release this little dev program and that is exactly what it turns out to be. A minute program where anything good isn't allowed.

I was actually banking on this coreplayer mobile thing but it seems it won't happen.
