the question is what does jailbreaking mean???

and should i do it or not???

how easy it to do??

I'm really not an advocate of the "search before you post" response. Frankly I think it's pretty rude and defeats the purpose of a forum, but this is definitely an exception.

I struggled with this too a few days ago but this forum really does eliminate confusion it is great so take a search around pertaining to the iphone you have ie: 1G, 2G or 3G iphone.

I won't go into the technical details so much but all jailbreaking does is give you the ability to access root.

You can change themes ie: your wallpaper, icons etc

Use MMS

download cracked apps for free rather than pay for them on via the apple itunes store.

Download 3rd party apps which by the way are awesome!


Here is a tutorial I followed on how to jailbreak your iphone 3G using a mac (If that's what you have - if it is a new mac this year (or windows pc) then you might need to read the forum on how to jailbreak)

Is it worth doing? yes I think so. The iphone is very boring and basic until your jailbreak it

I agree, I must have spent hours and hours working out how to jailbreak and sort out my confusion with all the different apps, specs needed etc.

I also had to work a lot of stuff out myself such as how to SSH into my iphone , change themes with winterboard etc

There is NO Point jailbreaking your iphone unless you understand what it means, how it works (up to a point) how to restore your iphone if things should go wrong + what application are needed in order to modify your iphone.

This unfortunately for everyone requires a little homework and patience if you want to do things correctly.

I don't think people on this forum mind answering your questions but they do expect you do a little searching by yourself, and to give back to the community by sticking around and helping out/joining in.

That being said, jailbreaking is definitely worth it. As mentioned above, the phone tends to get a little boring when you leave all of Apple's walls in place. Jailbreaking does nothing to harm your phone and is completely reversible.

How long does it take? About 3 minutes.

Go into the Themes (Springboard) section on Cydia and take your pick. Download to your heart's content.

Once you've downloaded some themes (or the one you're looking to get), go into Winterboard and select it. Hit the home button and your springboard will reset with your new theme installed.

Nice! I've been very leery about Jailbreaking, but once I did it to get the Emoji and found out I could restore back to factory, I've been hooked. There's so much you can do!

It's a strange situation for me. I got my phone originally with 1.1.3 and have jailbroken every firmware up from there. When I first jailbreak I go crazy installing stuff and have every possible aspect of the UI customized. As time goes on I begin to miss the cleanliness of Apple's design and slowly remove things.

As of the now the only thing I have on my JB'n 2.2 is the shiny dock (looks SO much better than the stock one) and a louder text alert.

Still, I'll never be able to go unjailbroken from here on. It's the little things that keep me coming back.

Apple's clean design is very very nice but I wanted a shiny dock too.

I was a little worried due to boredom as I paid so much for my iphone, and it was only 2 hours out the box.

Me either, I am going to stick with a jailbroken phone, I couldn't go back to it being unaccessible now.

From there you just search for Shiny Dock. Install. Be happy.

Agreed. And this new version of Cydia is just leaps and bounds above all previous versions. It makes everything so easy and the "Changes" tab laying out all of the new packages added just makes it that much better. You never miss an addition!
