Hey Guys,

I have a 3g and I'm bored as all hell. Im not gettting the new one this summer because I dont have the dough and Ive kept my 3g is pristine condition. However, my girlfriend is excited because she will be getting the 3.0 this summer. She keeps busting my stones about video, cut and paste, etc....
Recently , Ive seen the youtube vids on jailbroken phones and screenshots online. It looks frikkin beautiful!!! Not to mention the video capabilities, tethering, cydia, even the icons for christ sake. Anyway, I have some specific questions because I'm really on the fence about this.

1. I'm not the most technical guy
2. I do alot of online banking on my iphone and Im nervous about security if I jailbreak. Should I be?
3. Ive read about some horror stories about phone performance etc...
4. Do I still sync my phone through itunes? Will I lose my apps that I have already downloaded? Do I even plug it into itunes at all again?
5. Will my at&t bill be outrageous? Ive heard some people getting clobbered with fees because of tethering after they jailbreak.
6. If I do decide to jailbreak, which is the cleanest/failsafe method to use? I guess which website because Ive read about a few.
7. Battery Life is subpar as it is. what is it gunna be like on a 3g running multiple apps?

If someone can help me here, it would be greatly appreciated!!!

1. Nice Statement  Don't worry jailbreaking is easy.

2. Jailbreaking has nothing to do with security.

3. Your milage may very. My phone was lagging a bit with Winterboard, so after 9 months I removed it.

4. iTunes syncing continues to funtion as normal. If your apps are in iTunes you can resync them after you jailbreak.

5. If you use tether EXCESSIVELY then, they might flag your account, but that is very unlikely.

6. Upgrade to 2.2.1 in iTunes if you haven't already, and download and run Quickpwn from here

7. I never run multiple apps. If you really want to you can use backgrounder. But just wait until OS 3.0 and that won't even be needed.

1. I'm not the most technical guy

There are plenty of easy-to-follow guides out there. It's not a complex process.

2. I do alot of online banking on my iphone and Im nervous about security if I jailbreak. Should I be?

If you're comfortable banking on the phone in the first place (I wouldn't be) then you'll be pleased to know that jailbreaking doesn't affect this at all.

Unless you install SSH and remove your user password and keep SSH running 24x7...

3. Ive read about some horror stories about phone performance etc...

I've gone over this many times before, but suffice it to say that if you avoid WinterBoard and anything else that runs in the background you'll be fine.

Jailbreaking itself makes absolutely no difference whatsoever to the performance of your phone.

4. Do I still sync my phone through itunes? Will I lose my apps that I have already downloaded? Do I even plug it into itunes at all again?

You can sync just fine. You will lose your apps in the initial flash (you reflash the phone to jailbreak), but after that everything else will work as you'd expect. Just don't update the firmware via iTunes.

5. Will my at&t bill be outrageous? Ive heard some people getting clobbered with fees because of tethering after they jailbreak.

I've never heard of anyone getting charged more due to tethering. I'm sure they'll notice if you started torrenting 24x7 or something, but if it's just the occasional bit of browsing/email/IM you're fine. Try to keep under your 5GB cap...

6. If I do decide to jailbreak, which is the cleanest/failsafe method to use? I guess which website because Ive read about a few.

The *only* website you should ever rely on for jailbreaking software is http://blog.iphone-dev.org

Everything else is either a rip-off or an inferior solution.

If you've got a Mac, I'd recommend PwnageTool for best results, but QuickPwn will work too.

7. Battery Life is subpar as it is. what is it gunna be like on a 3g running multiple apps?

Depends on what your CPU usage is like. If you're constantly running a lot of CPU-intensive stuff your battery life will decrease -- same for tethering. It's entirely dependent on your use.

Thanks Guys

Thanks for your help. I guess my last question: do you have anything to add about jailbreaking? Anything important I left out or should know?

Do a DFU restore before you bring it in to Apple for warranty service.

Ok Im going to jailbreak...now I guess my question is: what the hell do I do first??? I have a pc....

Hey Guys,

Anything added to the 3.0 software will work on the 3G just as well as a new iPhone (unless it needs new hardware like a magnetometer or front facing camera to name two of the rumored/wished for additions for the new phone). So when the 3.0 software comes out you would have video, cut & paste, etc, too.

hey jmann

When the 3.0 software comes out, i have to restore settings before I upgrade to 3.0 correct? Then I have to find the jailbreak for 3.0 right? Im just being careful with this cuz I want to do it correctly.

Most likely a few weeks after 3.0 is released a jailbreak will follow. You will have to restore, but you can either do the upgrade and jailbreak at the same time with Pwnage Tool (Mac only) or upgrade and then jailbreak with Quickpwn. What ever you prefer.

hey jmann

hey dude,

Im trying to download quickpwn for windows and my comp cant find something to open/download the file with. It asks me if I wanna search for a file to open it so I clicked yes. Then a ton of websites come up labeled "download torrent files here"...im so frikkin confused

Search youtube for "how to jaibreak" video's, that way you can see how easy it is.

I have jailbroken my ipone - mainly for the beter SMS apps out there. However, hopefully the missing features in Apple home grown app will be added for 3.0. If so I am going to un-jailbreak I think - possibly :)

I have horrible performance problems, but I has not considered removing Winterboard first. It is nice to be able to download/rip things from youtube and the other things you can do, but I could probably live without it if 3.0 offers what I need. I would miss having the contacts picture down the list of contacts though :(

Trying not to hijack and I think this is related to the OP's question.. I had the first gen iPhone in Canada so I wasn't concerned about ever being able to get the legitimate firmware upgrades... I jailbroke and unlocked my phone and didn't worry about ever having to reset it.

Assuming we're just jailbreaking, the DFU restore will reset the phone back to original set-up right? Like the OP, there are a couple of things that I'm dying to get (mostly background apps) that MIGHT be included in 3.0 software. I would prefer not to jailbreak (for whatever reason) and am hoping that I could jailbreak now and if 3.0 addresses my needs then reset my phone and go "legit" again.

The phone can always be unjailbroken at any time, just by restoring through iTunes. The DFU restore is the most thorough way to put your device back at factory default, incase you wanted to update to the official 3.0 OS.

If you haven't upgraded to 2.21 then run Pwnage tool. This way you can still unlock your phone. At the very least you'll be able to sell an unlocked 3G for at least as much, or even more, as the new one will cost you.

All the info is on Pwnage Tool's site.
