I am planning on buying the nikon d5000 this weekend and am wondering if I should get it with the kit lens or just go with the body. If I go the body route I'm obviously going to need a lens, are there any lenses in the $200 range that would be better then then kit lens on the d5000. The lens is Nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR AF-S DX Lens. I really don't have a specific aspect of photography I will be focusing on but I do enjoy taking action shots.
Thanks

Since you just starting out, get with the kit lens unless you have other lenses to boot with the camera then that is a different story. Besides, Nikon kit lens ain't that bad.

No, unless you can find an awesome used lens somewhere.

The kit lens is pretty good. It's just not great in low light conditions because the aperture is quite small. It's sharp though, and the 18-55 mm focal range is useful.

If you're willing to spend the money on a Sigma 18-50 mm f/2.8 HSM, which will autofocus on a D5000, I'd get it. It couldn't cost THAT much money.

Wherever I hang my hat...
The kit lens should be fine. I got a D200, when I 'went digital', which came with the 18-70mm kit lens. It's sharp and versatile, so, instead of upgrading it, I've kept it... and 95% of my pix are shot with it...

Kit lens is fine. You could compliment that with a proper flash like a SB-600 or 800 to compensate for the low light. Often, great lighting makes or breaks a photo.
