To Refurb, or not to Refurb...

Hello,

I'm probably going to buy an iMac to replace my aging first gen (single 1.8!) G5 tower, and I'm looking at the very good prices for refurbs.

Any comments from you guys on the value of those refurbs? Same warranties? What if I get one of those iMacs with very bad monitors? Can I send it back?

I'm looking to get a refurb 24" iMac [white], but am curious to know what I could do if the screen had an issue, or the humming issue as well.

I really love the white model, and as much as I would love to have the 500GB HD and 256mb graphics, I just can't seem to find one.

Currently I have a Macbook Pro, 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo w/ 4GB RAM, 256mb GPU. I love it to death, but miss having the 24" iMac [though previously I had the Alum model w/ a horrible screen bleed! ]. Plus, a little cash can always help out with the bills, and there's never wrong w/ trying to give someone a great deal on a lovely MBP!

What refurb model did you buy exactly? Were there any hidden 'bonus' extras so to speak? [RAM, HD space?]

I have a 20" 2.0GHz/4GB RAM that I bought new. I just purchased a 2.2GHz Macbook refurbed, and love it. There is one dead pixel, but other than that it's perfect. Like a brand new system...

No complaints, other than wanting to add more RAM to it, which is ordered and on the way!

If you're okay with not wanting the latest and greatest, then go for it. You won't regret it...

I ordered a 2.8 refurb on the 29th (very early in the morning like 1 am).. I can't tell you how it works because FedEx is the slowest delivery service in the world.

In this world of 24 hour everything.. it seems FedEx doesn't ship anything on Sundays nor do they update their website tracking on Saturdays. This is the last update they did.. "May 1, 2008 8:41 PM In transit LENEXA, KS" 4 days later and it seems my iMac is lost in the iTwilight Zone.

My estimated delivery day of the 3rd has now been changed to the 6th.

Aside from how great FedEx is, I personally think the refurb 2.8 is the best bang for the buck, unless you really want that new video card.

Yeah, that new video card doesn't really do much for me, as I definitely don't NEED it.

Best value for the dollar is what's important to me. I'm just scared to order a refurbished iMac, especially the Alum ones, just because of the screen bleeding. I used to have the 24" iMac, and the screen bleed bugged me so bad, even after 2-3 different computers.

Disappointing.

Screen bleeding is a major concern for me as well. I'm not a pro photographer, but I do spend a lot of time working on images.

If I find that my refurb iMac has that bleeding, can I return it just like I could with a brand new one?

I bought a white imac intel 20". I got a "bonus" of 256 mb video (ordered a 128 mb). With 1 year warranty and the ability to still purchase applecare I fell refurb in a no brainer.

I'm in the same boat. I ordered a 2.8 refurb. I'm just waiting for FedEx to deliver it.

I thought the 2.8 was the best value. 500GB Harddrive and 2GB of RAM out of the box, all for $1600. I have a 20" iMac at work, so having the extra screen real-estate at home will be a nice bonus.

I'm hoping nothing goes wrong with the refurb, as this is my first time ordering one. I bought my Macbook from Amazon in 2006, and it was smooth sailing. I'm unsure about the refurb, but I thought I'd give it a try. Worst comes to worst, I have to ship it back to Apple and get a replacement/refund.
