I'm writing this, because for two last days my head was occupied with only one thought - what is the best option, computer-vise, to stay in the game longer?
I'm a graphic designer. Around a year ago I've bought a 2009 octo 2,26 mp. At that time it looked like the best possible money investment. The capabilities of the machine looked like an overkill for my tasks, and i was buying it to have some extra power for future, but it turned out, that I can actually use all the capabilities of my machine. I've got into generarive design, and it's related to using scripts, wich require lots of ram. Also i was working on a video for my band in fcp, and the machine nailed this task. Also I like to play some games once in a while, stuff like diablo3, etc., and my mp was even capable to handle that 'task'.
So my plan was - buy a mp of ebay, buy 32gb ram from owc, buy a decent vga, buy an ssd, and ship everything to Ukraine, ending up with a machine that could last for around four years, perform all my tasks and spend only $2000. Then, i planned to upgrade firmware to 5.1 and get to 12 cores and more ram, so the machine could live several years more. Long term plans, i know.
But now, I'm having second thoughts. What if i sell my current rig and buy a new mp, when it's released? Here in Ukraine i can get for it more money, then i've spent on it (around $2500). Would that be a better investment in my case? I'm confused. I'm afraid that soon, really soon my mp would be ditched by apple. New OS seem to come out every year, so what if in two years from now there would be no support for 09 mp? What if i would not be able to get the newest software when I'll need it?
I have a huge fcp project planned for the early 2014, and it would last for quite a while, so I should make some decision before it starts, as i would depend on the machine I'm gonna perform it on.
