I have a 2011 mini that right now goes to sleep after an hour or so. I would like to use log me in, but that requires the mac to never sleep. Will this harm the Mac in the long run having it run 24/7?
Any other options?

I cannot use Ethernet where it is at, so wireless n is the networking option

Thanks

I'm not an expert and on still using Snow Leopard but at the very least I would go into Energy Saver and select "put hard drive to sleep whenever possible"

I tried, no go. Thanks though

I'll try the shut off hdd when able as mentioned above.

Any downfalls to doing this?

Thanks

Other than higher electric bills, no not really. Just make sure the HDDs spin down when not needed.

My Mac mini G4 has been running pretty much constantly since I bought it in 2005. The only problem with it seems to be the optical drive, which is odd because I so very rarely use it. Other than that my mini is still running like a champ.

I used to have the hard drive sleep option enabled but it meant that whenever I hadn't accessed the external hard drive for a few minutes I'd have to wait 5 or more seconds whenever I wanted to read or write to it for the hard drive to spin up. It got to be very annoying so I disabled that feature. This may be a problem with my particular hard drive rather than with that option in general though.

Edit: D'oh!

Last question, how long will the computer spin the hard drive idle until it sleeps? Thanks for all the help

Man, you've had your mini 10 years before Apple started to sell them and 4 years before G4 CPU debut  :D

Sorry for OT, but I just couldn't resist ;)

And to OP: I never put my 2010 to sleep, it's running 24/7 without issues.

No, there's nothing wrong with leaving it running. Caffeine will override your Energy Saver settings and keep it awake, with just a click of the mouse.
