So I'm very conflicted right now, I currently have a 2018 Base 13" Pro with 16gb Ram upgrade.

I was planning on upgrading to Apple Silicon as soon as it was pretty much confirmed that's what this event would be, but I was hoping for a design change rather than just an internal change. This is swaying me to wait until next gen, my thinking is that they may be going the route that PPC to Intel took that was just an internal change, then next gen we got Unibody designs.

Performance wise, I don't see a reason not to upgrade for my use case as long as I stick with the 16gb upgrade option.

So the conflict is, upgrade for the speed... or wait for the redesign to come as it will probably make me want to upgrade again. Thoughts?

I’m not sure I’m torn, I have a 2017 pro with 512gb if storage don’t really use it much besides my kids doing school work and some games. Apple offered a trade in of $620.00 think it’s worth trading in for the Air?

I can’t see a redesign being much different maybe a bigger screen with smaller bezel?

There undoubtably will be a bumpy road ahead until things get ironed out. If I absolutely needed a low end MacBook right now (or Mac mini) I'd definitely buy a current gen intel Mac and not one of these experimental things.

$620 is a great trade in for a pre-retina, I'd upgrade for the screen alone!

id wait a year or 2 at least before getting a M1 system. The emulation software Rosetta 2 is likely to be buggy and the existing software may not run well as was originally claimed. Also don’t expect 100 percent compatiability of existing software on day 1

and a word of warning, anybody expecting to run iPad versions of Facebook or YouTube on m1 will be very disappointed on day one the time m1 mac machines is released to the public

A computer is just a tool. If your current machine is doing everything you want it to do - why spend any money to upgrade? After all a 2018 is going to be supported for years to come.

If you think that you have indeed come across a strong use case that is not being met with your 2018 computer, then run the numbers to see if whatever incremental benefit you derive can be supported by the cost to buy a new computer.

Id say it depends on what you use it for and what you want to and need to run. for me its DOA because of the bad multimonitor support and a couple other issues for my personal needs.
