iOS today widget use

I've done a bit of reading about extensions and would like to develop one for my app but I'm a bit unclear about what is allowed and what they are capable of doing.

I have an app that tracks your movement via gps like a run keeper. I want a simple today extension that would allow you to start and stop the recording of your movement. the stop button would do all the default things the app would do (like saving the trip etc)

is this kind of use possible?

It is. Strava has a widget that does the same thing.
