Everyone used to think that... although he worked at Pacific Bell as a DSL engineer before Dilbert took off. He confessed right before he finally left his job that he'd stayed on for a few extra years just for new material for the strip. I think they had some layoffs, and he volunteered to be cut.

He does get a lot of idea submissions from people, hence the "he must work at MY company" idea that everyone seems to have.

Plus, it's the whole point of Dilbert that there's a dysfunctional aspect to corporate culture that runs as a common thread throughout many companies. Things like Adams' stories really do happen at lots of companies, whether or not people there are reading them. So lots of people have had the experience of having a pointy-haired boss. I do have to tip my hat, though...he's very good at it! :)

Kind of like everyone who watches the simpsons can come up with a few reasons that springfield is actually in their home state.

IIRC, Matt Groening chose the name Springfield because there IS a Springfield in EVERY US state.

EDIT: OK, maybe not EVERY state...

My first guess was Hawaii, which is apparently correct. But I guess there are actually a rather large number of states -- if Linkety is correct. :)

Yes, the lists actually appear to match, since your list has 36 states and territories, including one territory (the Virgin Island), and the list I found only included states in their 35.

Right, but I mean the two are similar in that the Dilbert office environment is ubiquitous in a comparable way to the the way that the simpsons' Springfield is a caricature of a reflection of many towns across the nation.

I'd have to say The Simpsons. There's something appealing about a whole dysfunctional family compared to a corporate structure.

No, he most definitely works at ours.

There's a guy in our team who occasionally prints out and puts a pertinent Dilbert strip on the cupboard doors of our floor's kitchen.

The laughter it gets is always tinged with underlying bitterness, resentment and sadness... particularly the ones about supervision, organisational goals and of course, the IT team.
