No TTS or live traffic, but the 1.1 update boasts Enhanced GPS technology and a new "Navigate to Contact" engine.

1.1 is, you could argue, bug fixes, not new features:

Enhanced GPS technology:
- Shows your location on the map with greater precision
- Follows your car more accurately while you drive

New "Navigate to contact" engine:
- Handles many more address formats including abbreviations
- Better supports US addresses

YAAAYaaaawn...

I can't believe they're not even trying to compete with Navigon on features. They seem to be relying almost solely on on brand recognition.

I feel like they are holding back any major updates until the "free update" period is over. Which is BS as far as I am concerned.

I recall reading somewhere on the TomTom site that updates will be free FOR THE REMAINDER OF 2009!!!!!

That doesn't sound good.

Doesn't say "....remainder of this year.", says that app updates will be free to existing customers. It does say they will be updating this year, which they have done.

With regards to the 1.1 update, yes, these are not exactly massive new features. The map does seem to reflect current position and motion, based upon my journey yesterday, with almost no discernible lag. This has been one of the main criticisms of TomTom compared to (e.g.) Navigon.

Hopefully future updates will include some of the features we would like to see added. For me, full UK postcode search included from the start was a winner.

this 1.1 update improved things a LOT for me.
For more than 2 months I had an unusable tomtom app but now I can use it!.

Only problem I had was that I had one route set up with tomtom: but it took me thru a road that's actually closed because of roadworks. the parallel road was previously a one-way street in the opposite direction. With the roadworks (it's actually more than roadworks, they're building a new line for the Barcelona metro so that road will be closed for a few years), they swapped the traffic direction on the parallel road.

So you add the two things and TomTom was SURE I was on the road that's actually closed.

I guess this is a very rare occurrence and I shouldnt' really blame Tomtom for that :)

This update fixed the GPS lag and not reading my address book entries correctly.

I'll now be happy to rate it 4 Stars.

Live traffic and custom voices will get it 5.

TomTom is still around? I thought all the savvy people went with Navigon.

They\we did. :D

And thankfully, some of us were able to get a refund for an application that was not ready for prime time. (Not to mention from a company that doesn't seem to give a rats butt about it's customers).

TTS is decent to have but a quick glimpse at your screen will show you the name of the street you should be turning on. Doesnt really mean that much to me. Accuracy is more important than anything. When it tells you to turn in 400 feet or whatever, it should be accurate. I havent tried this update, but hopefully its better.

has anyone had problems download the update? i am trying to download it and it says "there is not enough space to download this item. Please delete some photos or videos". i have 19 photos on my phone, its a 3g so no videos, and i have 2.5GB of free space. Do i have to be on a wifi network for it to download or what?

Try deleting your old TomTom app on the phone, and installing the new one via itunes.

You need to have double the app size to install. So if Tom Tom is 1.5GB you need 3GB of free space to install it.

Yes, if you're not using iTunes for the update.

Also, see above about disk space.

The updated application is, yes. (W.Europe version)

Remember, iPhone apps do not install updates, as such. They reissue the entire app and you have to download and install the new version.

thanks i didnt know that. the US version was 1.2G, didnt realize that till i got home from work and looked at it on itunes.
