Got my new MBP SR 2.4, 160gb 7200rpm a couple of weeks ago. Installed iStat immediately. Initially my computer would idle at about CPU temps of 40-45C. Just browsing on Firefox would not raise the temps much. Recently, CPU temps are more like 55-60C with just internet browsing. Last night I left the MBP on but attached to the charger with no applications running. Woke up in the morning to find the CPU temp at 55C. Is this too hot? Thanks for any input!

other, thanks for the response. i've seen high temps when stressing the cpu such as when running cpu intensive software or curiously importing photos into iphoto. however, is an IDLE temp of 55C on the hot side?

No it's not. Try stressing the CPU and see what you get, 55 °C is nothing.
may macbook ran much hotter, my sony vaio was worse then any mac i ever had

I have the 2.2ghz (which should run a bit cooler I guess, but not much so), and the higher it gets doing simple stuff (Adium + Camino + Mail some times +Quicksilver) is around 48C. iTunes gets it pretty hot (53C +). If yours is at 55C i'd say that's about normal. HOWEVER I do find worrisome that overnight it remained at 55C. By "on" do you mean "sleeping"? Lid open but asleep? or fully operational? My MBP gets pretty cold overnight, some times 18C+ (I live in FL, so thats really cold.)

Lid open... I thought that it would have gone to sleep w/ no activity overnight. However, in the morning the indicator light was lit and not pulsing... I assume this means that it was on. In any case, there were no open applications and the CPU temperature was 55C. Do you feel that this is indicative of malfunction?

I would say: "No." If the computer doesnt go to sleep, many processes remain active (even if no applications seem to be running). Your MBP didnt go to sleep (the display shuts off after a while, and the front LED turns on [static] to let you know the computer itself is on. I'd advise you to set the computer to sleep when it's inactive for an extended period [say, an hour or two if you're not downloading torrents or something like that], it will not only save you power, but also allow your computer to cool down the heat it generates while working.)
