Top News widget -- see only top story?

On my older iPhone, the News widget (found by swiping left from the homescreen) would only show the top story, which I preferred.

On my new iPhone 12 Pro, the News widget shows multiple stories. How can I have it show only one top story?

To my knowledge, it isn’ possible with the widget.

If you swipe to the left widget screen and tap Edit (or hold down in a blank space), you can tap on the “+” at the top left. Then scroll down to the News widget and tap on it. You will be presented with several different options. If you scroll all the way to the left of those options, you will get a widget which will give you a small square with just the headline and associated picture of the top story. Or, the second option will give you a wider widget with just the top 2 headlines and smaller associated photos. You can see examples of both styles in the second screenshot.

Thank you. I think Apple should make just one widget and allow us to customize it rather having to many different widgets.
