I was unlucky enough to get completely un-usable iMacs this past weekend. Had to return it 3x because of iSight dead pixels, Dust and other anomalies in glass and yellow tinge. Heck, I should have know better, all the units I got were week 53's.

Anyway, tried to call all Apple Stores in town today and and they're all completely sold out, so I was told by the ladies who took my calls. They don't know when they're getting any at this point.

Here's hoping they finally get good ones in stock soon.

Just a little tidbit to my fellow Torontonians. :)

Fellow Torontonian here, with third return going in today. Not gonna bother with these machines. Curious, if you've had 3 defects, why bother with another one?

I hear ya...and yes, I did have 3 defective ones all from batch 53.

1st one had slight yellowing on the right bottom, but bearable to me. Although it had several iSight dead pixels which broke the deal for me.

2nd one was exactly the same case and even more dead pixels on the iSight, plus anomalies inside the LCD screen.

3rd one had a perfect screen, perfect iSight but numerous anomalies under the glass and underneath the LCD screen.

I assumed whoever was minding the QC during for this batch was asleep at the post. The thin foam wrapping on the first unit I got was hastily wrapped around, making me think something was really, really not right.

I really like the iMac i5 and the big screen is just beautiful and will be useful for my video work, but I will only try to get another one if and when they replenish their stock from a newer batch this time (preferrably 2010 manufacture date). I've been hearing people getting good ones from the latest batch. :)

Last time I spoke with AppleCare was a couple of days ago, and senior adviser said the problems with flickering/blackouts hasn't been solved. Nevertheless, who knows, maybe he was wrong and the new batch is ok. Every one says something different. You never know who you should believe. As difficult as it is for me to part ways with this beautiful screen ..... I gotta do it. I can't bother anymore. Good luck!

That's what I was thinking too. Letting go of it was not easy. I even said I was gonna live with a few imperfections if any but at the same time I just can't justify this with the amount of money I spent with it. It's such a shame somebody or something is causing these defects to happen during production (or maybe shipping, who know's.).

There seems to be a light at the end of the tunnel...Apple reportedly halted production and will resume shortly after things are taken care of. This should explain the lack of stock here in TO.

Go Apple! Hurry and fix this and your QC credibility! :)

sounds like on the third try you should have just popped the glass and air dusted the insides. Now you're stuck waiting for a perfect one to pop up, might be your next 3 exchanges, lol;)

I agree about QC issues, but yours sounded pretty minor in my opinion, (though I have opened and upgraded my past 24" and now my new 27") popping the glass and keeping it dust free with a can of air duster and camera lens paper works wonders.:D

Hehehe...I actualy considered popping the glass off but I was afraid I'll be introducing new dust in the process. I really don't have a dust free environment to work in unfortunately. I'm also afraid popping out the glass will tamper the natural sealant from the factory, therefore introducing more glass in the future. Let us know how yours is one of these days. ;)

I remember, when I tried to remove 2 specks of dust from my old fat PSP, I ended up with more dust than before and I couldn't seem to get rid of it no matter what I did, it just kept getting replaced by new darn dust particles. I come from a "scale modeler" background and I think I pretty much have the skill to this kind of thing. But it's just not working I'm afraid.

You're killing me smalls, lol, Natural sealant? lol (creatively thought) look at the teardown at ifixit.com the seal is around the LCD itself and the glass is held by magnets. There is no special adhesive on these things.

Mine is still perfect, I took it apart a few weeks back to install a Intel X25M SSD and bluRay drive. I looked at it again yesterday, no dust trapped inside.

But I agree with you that Apple should have better QC in the first place.

I know, I get really nervous hehehe...now I feel bad returning the third...but that's OK I guess.

I can't believe it's held by magnets!!! I have to check that out. Thanks my friend. ;)

Hi,

How can I check what week my imac 27" i5 is? I have yet to encounter the problem others have had so far (im knocking on wood).

But all this talk has got me cautious, since I have the worst luck when it comes to buying electronic products I allways get the defective one.

Check your iMac's 'birth certificate' here (just enter the serial number in the neon green box at the top):

Toronto Eaton Centre Now Have i5's-And They're Week 5!!!

You read that right folks...week 5 i5's are at the Toronto Eaton Centre Apple Store.

Just got mine home and although it has a slight yellow tinge in the bottom right, it's bearable and I think I can live with it. Besides, this is my 5th replacement.

Hmm, is this coincidence?:
i5
Week 5
5th replacement
=5th time's the charm :)

Wow good to know! So the yellow tinge is less significant than that of your previous 4?

Oh no...I Spoke Too Soon

Yes indeed!!!

After spending about 3 hours on a seemingly usable iMac i5, I again noticed a dark spot the size of a sesame seed on the white background. It is lighter this time around but I still can see it when I look at it.

I have started a post regarding these specks that I noticed on the first 4 iMacs I have returned. They are not dead pixels but somehow, a piece of glass or dirt embeded on the LCD screen.

This is really frustrating. The thing is, I have used my 10% discount (given to me by the Apple manager on my 4th replacement) on this purchase. I just hope they give it back to me.

I do not know at this point if I should give up. :(
