Torrent is a Trickle

I know stuff has been posted about this but I still have trouble getting it set up and bittorrent is still a trickle. I thought I would post my settings and see if anyone had ideal what need to change. Here is my Set-up

12 inch Powerbook w/ airport installed
Running 10.4.2
Airport Express
Bittorrent
4.0.2

And the Airport is plugged into an RCA cable modem. I know my bandwidth trough comcast is like 3 m/sec (what everthere standard is)

Do I need to set something up on the cable modem? I've attached several screen shots of my settings including one of bittorrent running showing the download speeds I'm getting. I've read stuff on the internet and It is still slow. Please help! I'd be happy to take screen shots of thing else you may want to see. Thanks!

Two things to look into. 1) Your torrent software. I've found Azureus to be faster than most clients. 2) Are your ports open on your router? Be sure to check that you have both TCP and UDP ports open. If you look in the help section of Bittorent, it will tell you which ports to open.

By Router are you refering to Airport Express or the Cable Modem? The settings on the airport as on this link:

Good suggestions, and a good starting point. I use Azureus as well and like it much better than BT - for whatever reason I seem to realize faster speeds as well, whether that's a coincidence or not... It's a much more powerful tool as well.

Also, check your max and min settings for peers, simultaneous uploads/downloads, swarms, etc. - these can impact your speeds as well.

try using force downloading. it will generate a swarm without the tracker.

Firewall OSX

You probably haven´t adapted the settings in OSX own firewall. Go to the system preferences/filesharing/firewall setting. There choose "new" and enter the following informations:

Service : Other
TCP: 6881,6889
UDP: 6881,6889
Description: Bittorrent

If your cable modem includes a router, you must free those two port configurations there, too.

It´s not enough to just do it for the airport configuration, solely.

I personally can recommend the original bittorrent client. With those settings I can get maximum throughput on my DSL (2Mbit down/200kbit up) using "bittorrent".

But do not forget that the overall speed is always dependant on the uploading capacities of the connected peers/seeders, too. If they hardly upload, you won´t get much download. And sometimes ymu must be poatient: I very often experience slow startups, and after a mere 40 minutes download rates go up in the sky. Or the other way round.

The most important thing is not the client software firsthand, but the right preferences in your firewall – either software or hardware wise.

Maybe you guys could help me out with this too as I have been having trouble with Azureus. So when I lived in NY i would get great down speeds between 200-400kps at times but now I am abroad in Israel and the speed is really really slow. Right now I have the port set at 55005 -- should i change this/are their any other settings I should change?

I guess I'm the odd one out . . . the default BT client works WAY better for me than Azureus ... Azureus doesn't work well with my iBook G4 I guess =P

I had the same issues with the official BT client and Airport Express. I set up my port forwarding, don't even have my OS X firewall activated and I don't cap uploads/peers. Try Transmission. It's still in early development but it boosted my download speeds 10 times.

something to think about is that the other peers might have a slow internet connection.
