Torrents!? lord help

coming from a windows bassed machine, i used uTorrent; however, this is not available on Macs.

1. would someone be so kind to provide a usable/easy program for torrents that are relatively self-working (in laymen terms....a program that doesn't require some Mac genius to run)

2. some torrents i hear won't run in QuickTime because of a thing called "Xvid"...? do i need to get this and how do i incorporate it into QuickTime to work?

Opera, the web browser will handle downloading Torrents for anyone.

Transmission is a good torrent client. Also, to play xvid or divx in quicktime, just get the codecs or try 'democracy player'.

1. Transmission or Transmission Nightlies (My preference on the bleeding edge.)
2. Use VLC or Perian for Quicktime.

I use a program called Azureus - just download your Torrent file and drop in download area and hey presto!

transmission is awesome, coming from azerus on the pc, even though thats available on mac, transmission is far simplier to use, and works wonderfully...

p.s. there's an entire forum just dealing with mac applications right here this forum is for macbook and macbook pro questions

getting teh codecs is just a matter of d/lding the file, right? But where do i place/install that file? in the QuickTime folder or just under Apps?

well, like i said, i do like the people in this paticular forum better, the some not all, seem to be a little too protective of their macs when software starts acting up, ive been accused of screwing up the program several times when it was a software area..but yeah

VLC looks neat, i love how websites that have multi os versions of its software give you the link for the OS you're using, i never realized sites did that until i started using a mac

I suggest reading my previous post.

It's up to you if you want to use VLC as your main video player, it supports the Apple remote too, or just use the Quicktime plug-in.

I like Transmisson's profile, but I actually swtiched back to Azureus (and I'm not an Az fan, so that was interesting...) because I got frustrated with certain interface aspects (it's very simple - too simple - I miss uTorrent SO much) and selective downloading isn't as functional.

Both are good - Az has memory issues - Transmission is as lightweight as uTorrent but not as functional. I read somewhere that the Mac development guy dropped out of the OS X uTorrent conversion - I hope they found a replacement.

Transmission is nice but does not support encryption so if your ISP uses traffic shaping to throttle p2p traffic you may wish to use Azureus. (and even then you may be screwed)

I just noticed this. I was using Azureus and out of curiousity, I downloaded the latest version of Transmission. It is a very light and clean client but I did get some sort of pop-up from my ISP about traffic shaping. I should've read it first before clicking it closed.

Any way around the ISP playing around with p2p traffic?

Transmission looks good I wished I knew about it earlier, but right now I am downloading something really big that I don't want to switch clients on. I currently use Tomato Torrent, which I really enjoy, previously I was using the official client and had really bad speeds and had trouble shutting down my computer. I just can't wait till uTorrent comes to macs that is one of the things I miss most about windows.

It depends on the throttling implementation. If they implement it well even encryption will not help. For example torrent traffic is easy to detect despite encryption, just look for a ton of outgoing and incoming connections to a certain iport and throttle based on that however implementations vary so encryption may help.

My votes for Azureus, Transmission, and VLC.

I used to use Azureus, and still prefer its options to Transmission's, but Transmission is getting better with each release and my GOD is it faster than Azureus (not downloading... just in terms of its tiny CPU usage).

Who is your ISP and why do they have software installed on your computer? I would recommend switching ISPs if possible... they shouldn't have anything but a passive relationship with your computer.
