Toshiba HD not recoginzed after El Capitan update

I have used a Toshiba 1TB external hard drive on my Mac for about 6 months with no problems. Then I upgraded to El Capitan a couple of days ago and ever since then the hard drive is not recognized. I get this message when plugging it in: "The dish you inserted was not readable by this computer" with the options Initialize (takes me to Disk Utility), Ignore, and Eject.

I've tried calling both Apple and Toshiba for troubleshooting and of course they were of no help. I did confirm with Toshiba that there are no updates for their hard drives as they are all plug and play. My main issue is I don't want to lose the data on the hard drive. Stupid me did not back it up anywhere so this hard drive is its only location. I haven't tried to Erase the data at all.

So I finally decided I would go to Best Buy and buy a new hard drive that definitely works on El Capitan. I got home today and went to plug in the Toshiba drive to an old Mac (haven't touched it in a year so not sure what OS is on there but obviously not El Capitan). Now it is not recognized on the old computer too! I then tried it in another Mac that doesn't have El Capitan and again, not recognized.

I have no idea what the problem could be since it worked perfectly fine before the El Capitan update and now doesn't work on any computer. It can't be a coincidence that it broke the exact time I updated...

Sorry for your problem and I do not have an answer, but you are not the only one having external drive problem. See this thread:

Most likely the data is still there but the directory is hosed. You could try a data recovery app. You files may lose labels so it's a big job ID and sorting everything. I have 6 externals drives on my Mini i7 and all the data drives were fine after the update to 10.11. However, the directory of my startup drive was damaged and I had to reformat! Luckily I had a clone as backup but still there may be more to this than mere coincidence.

Can anyone recommend a good, reliable data recovery app? Preferably a free service (if that exists).

I decided to cut my losses and erase and reformat the Toshiba. However, when I tried to erase I got this message: Erasing "Toshiba External USB 3.0 Media" and creating "Untitled", Erase process has failed. Press Done to continue. Then when I click on Details it says in order: Unmounting disk, Unable to write to the last block of the device, Operation failed...

Does this sound like the Hard Drive is actually damaged and just happened to be a coincidence with El Capitan?

I've had exactly the same - upgraded to El Capitan, and suddenly my Toshiba drive P/N HDTD210ESMEA is met with the "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer" message. It contains all my back ups and photographs - my entire collection.

I did some Googling and managed to find the following link:http://support.toshiba.com/sscontent?contentId=4008402

Basically you have to open the drive on another device and remove the password protection (by entering your password).

When you plug it back into your Mac it should be able to read the Toshiba drive.

It works.
