I am unable to access my HD, it is not shown in finder. however I have set the preferences to show it in desktop.

When I try to find the problem in disk utility, I able to verify the disk and rectify it. Mount, unmount options are greyed out. only options available is new Image.

Please help me how to access the hard drive. I have Mac OS X version 10.7.5.

Is it formatted journaled (HFS+)?

If you can, try repartitioning/reformatting it. I usually find that rectifies this problem. BUT I note, in case it is not obvious, you will lose all your data on the drive so backup before you do it.
