My co-worker and I are both connecting to the same wireless network here at work. The router is a D-Link in the room next door (regular plasterboard wall between, not brick). My co-worker has a MacBook (Intel) about a year old, and I have a Powerbook G4 12 inch (PPC) about two and a half years old. We are both running OS X 10.4.9, and we both use Safari, Yahoo Messenger, etc.
HOWEVER, my co-worker's MacBook seems to be getting constant reception of the wireless signal, whereas my Powerbook G4 is having all manner of networking issues. I know the antenna in the PB G4 is smaller, but on top of this I will get a Total Signal Drop (i.e. Nothing, no signal, no detected network, nothing) while my co-worker is just fine on the internet.
I went out and bought a D-LINK DWL-G122 Wireless G54 USB Adapter, switched off Airport, and starting using the USB Wirless. Due to a mess up by D-LINK, I had to download a driver from Ralink Tech. Then the USB Wirless was working and getting me a better signal strength and internet speed than Airport. I made sure to switch OFF Airport while the USB Wireless was switched on (D-Link USB Wirless is now the ONLY network config that is ON).
HOWEVER, the next day, after my PB G4 was sleeping for a night, I logged on, got internet and then in the middle of everything the signal VANISHED again - even with the better strength from the USB. We work in a flexible environment as far as placement in the room goes, and my co-worker was FARTHER from the router and still getting a Full Signal and on the internet just fine.
This time, when I went to check to see why the signal had vanished it turns out that for some reason my PB G4 seemed to have TOTALLY EJECTED the Ralink Tech driver!?!?! Whats up with that???
I reinstalled the Ralink driver and got signal again, which I am now using to write this before it crashes again.
ANY ONE WHO HAS INSIGHT PLEASE SPEAK UP / ADVISE!!
Our business is VERY internet contingent and I cannot afford to keep having these drops.
Thank you all for your time and taking the time to read this.
Sincerely,
