I am still on the fence about getting an iPad, but I have spent a decent amount of time playing with one on a couple of different occasions.

One thing that has occurred to me while test driving is that the iPad requires a considerable amount of hand travel across the screen in comparison to a notebook with a touchpad. I wonder if this would get old in practice.

While in bed, I rest my Macbook on my stomach, propped up vertically, supporting it with my left hand while navigating the touchpad with my right hand. Being that the touchpad is small and close to the "bottom" of the computer while propped up vertically, I can rest my arms comfortably and perform the majority of tasks within a 3" area of the touchpad.

With the iPad, navigation requires moving my hand across the entire surface of the screen, over and over. This is compounded by the iPad's glaring lack of gestures and combination taps, sorely missing from apps like Safari.

Has anyone else been bothered by the constant need to traverse the entire screen every time you want to move forward or backward on a webpage, or any other operation that requires your hand to visit the top of the screen repeatedly?

With any luck an update will bring multitouch gestures and multi finger taps.

If you flick your hand doesn't need to travel the entire screen.

You don't need to do big gestures to move pages up and down. You can still just flick your finger in a small increment vs swiping the entire screen.

ETA: Scary that Anthony and I were so in sync down to our word "flick"

Time will tell if that glaring inefficiency of this tablet will make any difference. I've already pointed out how any old Mouse based UI requires about an inch of movement to traverse and access the entire screen. The iPhone or any other phone sized touch device can be held in one hand and controlled with small movements of a thumb. This s t r e t c h e d iPhone UI may not turn out to be the best possible UI for a 9" tablet.

I find the iPad is a lot less stressful to use in bed IF you sit it up right in landscape mode. From there it's a huge wall of touch screen awesomeness...:D

Not completely positive but I think we may need to be a little embarrassed about this! :D

How lazy are you! Its a 10 inch screen!

I think you'd move your hand just as much turning a page on a hardcover book. What do people want, just to be able to lie in a comotose position and have their computer give them information without having to move any muscles at all? Is that what the world will eventually come to?

True enough, but I'm referring more to things like accessing bookmarks and navigating back/ forward, nevermind typing an URL, which I imagine could be quite annoying while lying down.

I have had to take time off work this week because I am so tired from playing with the new toy:rolleyes:

Maybe when the next version of the iPad comes out with a front-facing camera, the book app will track your eye movements and automatically flip the pages for you at the right time.

Wow..I was just going to post I use it in landscape in bed. (like an open laptop).

Guess, everyone's different...I don't mind the 'hand distance' and gladly trade it for the 'convection heater' effect of my MBP.

Hey...we need to put a poll up on how many have seen an increase use of the internet in 'non-traditional' places. There's several posters who love using this thing in the 'throne room'....Where I have started laying in the hammock outside listening to music and roving the internet...(wouldn't want to do that with my MBP...I could but not as comfortable).

There ya go. But then again, some of these people would find fault with that as well.

Talk about some lazy people here on the forum! Since when is 1 1/2 pounds too heavy to hold in your hand for awhile?
