Does anyone know if this is a problem with the MacBooks? I ordered one a few days ago (can't wait til it gets here!) and haven't used them enough to know if this is an issue.

It would seem that with the magnetic latch when you open the laptop, your finger would touch the iSight and smear it.

Thanks!

I've opened a few macbooks, and I don't think I've ever touched the iSight camera. There's a little gap between the camera and the area you use to push it open. I wouldn't worry about smearing the camera, Apple usualy thinks about this stuff. :)

I've not even thought about that. but ill be honest i dont use the iSight that much to be bothered.

I'd say ive never touched it, or never noticed that i have...
either way id imagine its easily cleanable. :)

I have noticed this on my macbook, and yes when I open the macbook 9 times out of 10 i find myself smearing the isight, but it's not a problem, the isight is well protected and i haven't noticed any loss in quality of pictures taken with the isight, in any case you could just wipe it off.

Maybe it's just us guys with large hands that have this problem :p

I wouldn't worry about it, like others have said. The iSight is covered and any smudges can gently be wiped off.

i have had my MB since Dec. and I haven't had any problem with the iSight. when i clean my screen i clean that too. i don't think it's really somthing u should worry about.:)

Yeah, I often find myself thinking "touching this can't be good for it".

I don't use the camera to notice if anything has happened to quality etc.

I have a MBP and every now and then I do touch the isight on accident, but it doesn't seem to effect the camera quality. the photobooth and ichat work just fine for me.

I think there might be a protective coat over the camera. or something like that.

How often do you touch the lens on your cell phone with no quality loss? I'm constantly running my fingers over the lens on the camera phone. It has a hunk of glass covering it for a reason. Also, it's not like it's a 5 or even 10mp camera. It doesn't have the best quality to begin with.

FWIW, I wouldn't go rubbing my finger on my Nikon SLR's lens, but I think you are fine accidently touching the iSight.

On my mbp I always by accident touch the isight when opening it. I just decided I would open it from the side from then on.

I touch it all the time. To be honest, I rarely, if ever use a webcam. I would if I persuaded more of my friends to get Macs and sign up to iChat.

you can chat with friends on ICQ, AIM and MSN with Adium and even video with MSN using Mercury (not that good but it works).
