Sorry for posting in 2 forums, but this rapidly got lost in the iPhone forum.

Upgraded to 2.1 this morning, now when I run Toy Bot Diaries, all of the sounds except the music soundtrack are UNPLAYABLY loud and distorted, using the grab hand sounds like an explosion.

I've tried turning down the phone volume, and even gone into Settings and reduced the Ringer volume.

I've tried a few other apps and games, like Cro-Mag and Enigmo, and they all work fine.

I removed the app and reinstalled, but still have the same problem.

Anyone else having this or other sound problems?

I haven't downloaded and installed 2.1 yet, so can't tell you about the sound.

Although...I'm having an entirely different problem with Toy Bot Diaries -- I'm stuck in an eternal loop on the level where you go up against the big red toy "tank." I've defeated it multiple times, but can't seem to progress anywhere else. There are two "exits" on that level, where you drop into blackness -- but once I do, it takes me right back to the beginning of the level, where I have to battle the tank once again. No matter what I do (including deleting and reinstalling the app), it keeps me in this continual loop! It's kind of maddening. Anyone else have this problem?

I haven't played the game since I beat it but I think you're talking about the boss on the last level. You just need to go back to the cannon and shoot yourself over that hole and you should be good to go.

Ah, that makes sense now. I figured it was the end of the game, but just wanted to feel like I actually accomplished it -- and not be in an endless loop. Thanks!

I have that problem too. And I really liked the sound of the grappling hook... until today. ='(

I've sent an email to their support address...hope they can get this fixed soon, I was really enjoying this game. Of course, I can't figure out how to get out of a level...

I haven't tested all my games, but I did try the game Tilt after 2.1 and I noticed the retro sound effect/music seems loud and distorted. At first I thought it was the volume being full, but it still sounded horrible a medium.

I'm having the same problem. It sounds like some sort of feedback (/delay) loop is going on for some reason.

Sound files broken under 2.1

It seems 8-bit audio files are distorted under 2.1. We'll have to wait for Apple or the 3rd party devs to fix this issue.

thanks...

Yeah, I saw that, too. The other strange thing is that for the last day or two, on the App Store, the version of the program still says 1.1, but on the right side in the descriptive text, it says "Update 1.2: fixed a sound issue caused by iPhone 2.1 firmare".

So, does the developer have independent control over the text that shows on the right, and Apple just hasn't posted the update yet? Or did Apple get the text updated but not the app? Enquiring minds want to know...

Yes, also having this problem. I only downloaded it after I got 2.1, so I wasn't sure if it was 2.1, a bad install, or even a bad phone... It also affects the free demo level set (Toy Bot Diaries Free), FWIW.

I rather like the game... I'm thinking about getting it after they fix it / after I finish Spore.

I've got the same problem with Asphalt 4. I actually didn't think about the fact that it happened after the update until just now.

So are devs using 8-bit audio to save disk space (hope not) or processor power? One would think that a device that is built to play MP3 files should use relatively little CPU time to play 16-bit audio?

I could see both cases. Remember, if a game is under 10MB, it can be downloaded over 3G or Edge, and sound effects/music are huge.

And the system only has *one* audio decompression chip it in, so can only use hardware to play back one compressed audio file at a time (usually used for MP3 music while sound effects are used for audio). Also, it's incredibly slow to load files off of the flash memory, so best to preload all your sound effects into RAM at once, and the smaller the files the less RAM is taken up by them (too much RAM and you risk your app crashing to the home screen to free some up).

Ahhh, those are all good points. My first game purchase was Spore so I guess my perception of standards was somewhat different. (Spore is 80MB).

Still, TBD seems fun enough to ponder buying. It's definitely a playable, enjoyable platform game, and I definitely love 2D platform games.
