Track by find my phone

Hello budies!!
I've just seen how a thief steal an iphone in Spain (underground) what makes thinking about the app find my iphone.
Is posible track the position without sending any display or sound notification in order to approach the area where the thief is before he realize?
Obviously, when you arrive at this area, you can send the sound notification to catch him.
